: Files missing from media player but on Linkstation
: jamiev January 05, 2012, 04:48:39 PM

Hello all

I currently own a Linkstation LS-CHL-V2549 running firmware 1.56. I use the unit mostly for media storage and play the media through either a PS3 or a WDTV LIVE unit.

The unit is functioning well, however, once I copy media to the linkstation through either direct usb on transfer via laptop, they do not initially show up on either media player. I know the files are there as I can access them through normal means via the laptop. I have checked settings on the Linkstation, ensured DLNA is running and have changed to the interval refresh time from 1 minute, to 5, then 10, then up to 60 and re-initialized the unit every time along with restarted the media player with no luck. Yet a coiuple of days later, the media appears on either the PS3 or WDTV unit.

Can someone please help?

Similar issue here.

Name:LS-CHL8B3            Firmware version:1.56

I have about 600 folders in my itunes folder on the NAS drive, but when i access the drive via on both the media server and web access only about 70 appear

But when i browse to the drive through my PC on both the network route and mapped drive ALL of the files are there

I have tried disabling the media server and restarting and refreshing, even sharing the itunes folder only but this limited file number still occurs when i access this way

Any ideas??

Similar issue here

LS-WVL2.0TL/R1 Firmware version:1.54

I use it with dlna tv (lg 42le8800): if I reboot nas, I can see only one/two files on tv.

If I open nas shared folder by pc, the files are there, ALLS!!!!

I made a lot of test (reboot, refresh,...) but nothing.

???????????????????

Same problem here too.

Folders and Files missing!

I have my tv, ps3 and even mobile unable to see the same folders so I can firmly pin point that it is something to do with the NAS . However, when I access the share folder with a computer all of the folders are there. Is this some error with permissions of the folders?

Anyone come up with a solution yet?

Same problem for me. I use my linkstation mainly with WDTV and got around the issue by accessing via the network share. Has its limitations though. I'd love to fix it!

DLNA is not the standardized protocol that everyone would like to believe. Some files work on one unit and may not work on another. From what I've seen TV's are the most fragmented when it comes to what they support. The best DLNA player I have seen and used is the PS3. It plays all the files that our NAS devices support. Tv's so far seem to be the worst because they either just don't support that many files or their DLNA clients are flakey.

Here is an example of the fragmentation that I'm talking about. I own the LS-WVL unit along with a Ps3 slim and a Sony Blu ray player. I've always never had a problem with playing files on my Ps3. Sometimes I'll get random DLNA issue but It's always pointed to the Ps3 being the issue. Usually just exiting from the LinkStation Media server and going back into it fixes it. But either way its been the best I've used. Then my family purchased a $600 Blu ray player that had DLNA and surround sound. Since it was from Sony I figured that it would be as robust as the Ps3 when it came to the DLNA client... I couldn't have been more wrong. The Blu Ray player only plays MPEG 2. I have to convert files to see them from my LinkStation. I could also use a Ps3 media server on my Pc to see all my files... But only because they were converted on the fly to MPEG-2.

The best thing to do when it comes to issues with DLNA is to check up on both the DLNA server and the DLNA clients capabilities before purchased.

Here is my setup.

I have a WZR-HP-G300NH connect to my LinkStation and my PC that is slave to a WZR-HP-G450H. My Ps3 connects wirelessly to my WZR-HP-G300NH. All of my devices are running the latest firmware.

I can stream these video files to my Ps3... MPEG-2, MP4, AVI, WMV,  and DivX.

I can stream these audio files to my Ps3... Mp3, M4a, WMA

I know I cannot stream MKV, ISO and FLAC

When I transfer files to my Ps3 I put them in a movie folder. They are instantly available on my Ps3. How I do this is I go to the Video's section, go to the LinkStation and choose view by folders and then dig down by the folder specifically. I do not view be artist, or category, or view all or anything else like that. When you choose that option the Ps3 has to build it's database. This may be the same thing with other DLNA clients. If your client has the option to view by folder you need to use it. I have the same issue on the Blu Ray player.

Before you purchase a DLNA sever or DLNA client you need to check the compatibility between the devices, specifically which file formats these devices will support.

I hope that this helps you guys out. I just got a hold of an LS-CHL so I'm going to test that out tomorrow to see how some stuff reacts on that unit and I will post back the results to see if there is any issue with this unit specifically.

Sorry John but I dont think I have made myself clear on the original problem.

The WDTV and PS3 do play the files on the linkstation, HOWEVER, both devices take 24 hours AT LEAST to find the file on the linkstation. As I have previously stated, this is a problem with the Linkstation and not either DLNA devices.

I have reset the Linkstation via Web Admin and a hard shut down, with no change. I do not do anything differently but at some point over the next day(s) the magical Linkstation fairies make the files available to see on both stated DLNA devices!

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As I had stated in my post, I just acquired this LS-CHL and I will test this out tomorrow. But how specifically are you trying to access the files on the Ps3? As in which optoins are you choosing on the Ps3 to view the files?

: Re: Files missing from media player but on Linkstation
: jamiev January 17, 2012, 04:05:52 PM
Via the media station options
: Re: Files missing from media player but on Linkstation
: Jotin January 17, 2012, 04:16:39 PM

I'm not sure what you mean by this. What I do is I go to my Ps3, I go to video and choose my linkstation. Then I select videos, then all folders (or by folders, not sure on the exact naming since im not in front of the ps3) and then I navigate the actual folders like I would on Windows to access the file. Without fail every time the file is there to stream as soon as I drop the file onto the NAS through Windows.

: Jotin January 18, 2012, 01:26:22 AM

This is a video file hosted on my LS-WVL's web server. The video shows me copying video files to the LS-CHL running firmware 1.56 and then it appearing on the PS3 less than a minute later. When I installed this unit I updated the firmware and restored the settings by going to system, restore/erase and choosing restore. I did not change any settings but changing the refresh interval in the media settings from 60 minutes to one minute.

If you're still having issues I would suggest that you try what I have done. I would even suggest reinstalling the firmware using FAQ 2 of 5.

I think the tread is going a little off track
The issue is that ALL files are present during network or mapped drive access
The issue appears to be that during both web access and media server access some of the files and folders are missing?

Personally I have found if I move the Folders around on the hard drive the appear on the media server access

I was addressing the issues of the origonal poster of this thread. So what you are saying shaneharper is that even on webaccess the files do not appear right away? The same goes for the media sever? What model is this for and on what firmware ?

Yea that's basicly it
When I log in through a laptop all files are there
When I log in through a mediaserver, some files are missing
: Re: Files missing from media player but on Linkstation
: Jotin January 18, 2012, 09:27:28 PM

Ok, so do the files appear eventually on your own or do you always have to move files around? When you say that you login through a media server, do you mean like accessing the files through a PS3 or are will still talking about webaccess or both? Is there a pattern to the types of files that are having this issue, say like certain file types, or a certain size?

When I log in via a ps3 or iphone and web access. The files are missing
When I log in through the my network direct as a mapped drive, the files are present
If I move them around on the nas they appear?

Is there a pattern to the types of files that are having this issue, say like certain file types, or a certain size? When you say you move the files around, are you moving them to a different share folder? Can you post a screen shot of your webaccess settings?

Hi add me to the list of users suffering the problem posted by the OP.

Maybe you have to experiance the issue to understand the problem but I will try to explain again in the hope a solution for this is found as my linkstation is on borrowed time in my pateints stakes.

1) On version 1.54 my linkstation would share AVI files accross my network and I would use either my PS3 or other DNLA device to play these files. However like other users have stated. It took 24 hours for any new AVI files placed on the linkstation to appear when using a DNLA or PS3 to browse the linkstation for the new files. However the new AVI files are always viewable when browsing the linkstation with PC.

2) Since the 1.56 the same example as above but now the new AVI files never appear even after 72 hours. Another observation I have made is that if you browse to a file on yor  linkstation you had stored before the 1.56 update and delete it using a PC on the network. The file deletes as you would expect on the PC browser but if then browse the linkstation using a PS3 or DNLA device the file you have deleted still appears but will no longer play giving error stating playback not supported on the PS3 for example.

I hope this will help customer support resolve this issue that has deemed my linkstation useless for my purposes.

Update

I have just followed the post by Jotin on how to force a firmware update.

I have now forced through the 1.56 fware again but the problems still persist and the web interface seams slow to respond.

A format is my last resort so I am looking for one of the older firmwares to force through if there is an archieve somewhere.

I'm experiencing exactly the same issue reported in this thread. I have ripped my DVD collection to a directory on my Linkstatiion (running FW 1.56). The directory (share/media/Movies2) contains 100+ files but when viewed on a DLNA player I only see 18 of them

I have 3 DLNA players (A sony blu-ray player, a sony TV and the MediaConnect iPhone app) - each of them shows this same subset so I'm confident it's the Linkstation server that's imposing the limitation. The files were all created using the same tool with the same settings.

I have tried re-installing the firmware and changing the directory name (hence the directory is now Movies2 not Movies) and I still only see a small number of the files. I've looked for a pattern between the chosen files that do manage to appear on the DLNA players but there'e nothing obvious (all the same type, a mixture of sizes, same permissions).

I have attached some screenshots so that you can see the files in that directory as mounted on my laptop and how only a small number of these files appear on the DLNA player.

Are there any other possible workarounds or suggestions how this can be debuggeed further?

Hello tech support is anyone reading this ??

May have a solution that has worked for me
Change the media server drive to a single sub folder rather than the root share
Rename directories that are missing to either a single word or use underscores
I was using "movies and tv" and it did not show up
Change the media server directory back
In my case this was the root share refresh and restart the server
Give it 10mins and re log in through your dnla browser and they should turn up
Not sure if it is something to do with spaces I the file directory names on the main share folder
But this has worked for me
I am syncing music off my pc and this shows up every time on the nas drive when I access via the dnla, but my movies and tv shows did not?

I have now formatted my drive and installed shonks 1.54 fware but the drive is still not showing up on my DNLA equipment. It shows okay browsing with PC.

The link station is on a static ip in the same range and workgroup.

I have tried to access the twonky page but get page unavailable at {ip address:9050}

Anyone have any ideas what to do next ?

UPDATE

I have installed shonks 1.54 firmware in debug mode and now have my linkstation working again with my PS3 and Humax Fox.

One final hurdle left for me now is to get my Sony Bravia KDL40ex403 to see the linkstation. It fails to find the linkstation (twonkey) as a media server.

But when i web browse twonkey I can see that the Sony Bravia is conected.

Is it now possible to go back to firmware version 1.37 as thats when my linkstation was most stable on my network.

I would be grateful if anyone has a back up I could use or a DL link for 1.37

They have release 1.57 now. Try this, maybe it will fix the problem

I have the same problem and 1.57 does not appear to fix the problem. I'd be grateful if someone from Buffalo could response to these posts...(and the lack of response isn't great PR is it?)

: Re: Files missing from media player but on Linkstation
: bennean July 05, 2012, 09:13:55 AM

I seem to have stumbled upon a way to fix this, on my system, at least. My Linkstation uses Twonky as its media server so if you go to port 9050 on the NAS you can access the Twonky server. From there you can rebuild the media database and then the missing files magically appear to DLNA clients.

HI, Dont know if you guys are still having problems with this but i had this a few times and both times it came down to the date on my linkstation being incorrect! might want to check your date in the system tab and make sure its right. You may notice that some of your files on your NAS have a date going back years and this will be because it was stamped with this date(by your NAS) when copied over. Fix the date, fix the problem :) Dont know why it does it, must be conflicting dates or something but this worked twice for me and is the firrst thing i check now.

HI JD-1978,  Hats off to you mate, I have had this issue several times in the past and not known what has resovled it.  HAd major issues last few days with majority of my folders not appearing, and after reading your post checked the date on my NAS which indeed had defaulted back to 2000, I set it correctly, now all my files and folders are shared correctly.

Thankyou!!

no probs m8, have to say im astonished that the so called experts on these things are having people fiddling about with their routers, IP's etc when the solution is something as simple as this! Really need to read and understand the posts better before they advise people :P

: Re: Files missing from media player but on Linkstation
: PeterSmithson December 26, 2012, 03:56:14 AM

I've got firmware version 1.63 and have started getting this problem.  A new folder I created would not appear to DLNA clients but would appear for anything using SNB (or whatever it's called - when you look on a PC or using a file explorer on my phone).

After messing with media server settings I gave up.  Then the next day, the folder was there!

Then I went to it again today and it had gone from DLNA again.

I plugged a USB drive in which seemed to force a re-scan of everything.  I took the drive out and after a delay, I can now see the new folder on DLNA again!  I'll have to see if it sticks this time.

The date isn't an issue on my system - it's set to use NTP and it's working well.

Hi there, I stillhave this problem, my date is right.  Weird bit is tho first the viewer (phone) showed only 7 items in the folder i called music.  When i copied over my music files about 90 gig is didnt change then i made a new files and copied between the two files, I draged and dropped and cut and past and copied now i have 32 folder showing but not the other 225... Date is right have re booted and now not sure but weather to actually just leave it! and see  but if anyone knows of other solution that would be great shame technical never answred
