: Buffalo Air Station Wireless G

Three questions:

How do I password protect my router?

How do I get both my lap top and my desktop online at the same time without the IP address conflict error? Laptop is running on Linksys network card, desktop is hard wired to DSL.

How do I prevent having to restart numerous times in order to get my laptop to connect? Currently it will only connect if the green Linksys box loads in the bottom right corner near the clock, then I right click and click on using windows wireless connection and THEN it will connect. However, the green box only appears when it is in a good mood. :o)

Any and all help would be great!

Access the router configuration web setup page. Click the security tab and set the WEP password.  Use the same password for the laptop and the desktop.

Setup the router with DHCP Dynamic IP address and configure the router IP address such as 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.  Setup the laptop and desktop network card with DHCP Dynamic IP so that you don't need to worry any conflict error, or use static IP address for the network card with IP address different from the router, laptop, and desktop.  I prefer the router use 192.168.10.1 with DHCP Dynamic IP, and let the laptop and desktop network card setting use DHCP Dynamic IP so that I don't have to worry the laptop and desktop IP address...just let the router assign the IP address for the laptop and the desktop.  Use a fix channel such as 1, 6, and 11 provides a more stable connection then to use "auto" channel.

Most laptop and desktop network cards use their own network connection, such as netgear and dlink.  If you set to let/use Windows to handle the network and it work fine, just use this configuration.  If the network card configuration requires to disable the let Windows to handle the network, use the network card connection icon to handle the network connection.

Thank you so much for your incredibly detailed response.

However... most of it went over my head. I am not sure how to access the web router page. :o(

Press the Windows toolbar START button, under Setting select the wireless network to locate your router connection IP address.

Open Internet Explorer and at the address bar type in the router IP address such as 192.168.1.1 and press enter.  It should bring you to the router setup page.  Type in the user name and password (check the router user manual for the user name and password).  The router configuration web page should pop up.  Now you are ready to configure your router setup.

Thank you! Can I do this from my laptop? The desktop is currently not working. Under start menu I do not have a settings option. I am using XP, is is under the control panal?

Also, I have been told to try typing in the ip address you mentioned above and each time I do in IE I get an error page. :o( I really appreciate your help, I am getting highly frustrated with not being able to get it all to work properly.

to get into the interface to setup your router you need to open up a web browser and type in 192.168.11.1 and that will bring you into the interface.

ok do a hard reset on the router.  Unplug the power and hold the reset button as your holding the reset button down plug the unit back in and countinue to hold the reset for about 30 sec the red light on the front of the unit will do a series of flashes then pause then flash again after the second time release the reset button.   Let it site for about a min and do a power cycle then try that 192.168.11.1 and make sure that the switch on the back is on auto not bridge.

   Properly you used the modem IP address instead of the router IP address.  Check the network gateway IP address either hard wire or wireless to the laptop.  Once you get the router gateway IP address, you should be able to login the setup web page of the router.

   At the Start button, locate the "setting" tab to find "network connection" tab to open your local/wireless network connection to see the gateway IP address.

   Hi, Josh! Thank you for all of your help. I was able to follow all of your suggestions except for the last step, to recycle the power on the router. The only way I know how to do that is to unplug it, but that didn't work. Would holding down my restart button on the router do it?

Well if you hold the INIT button down then make sure you dont reset everything to defaults.  Just unplug it again and let it sit for a bit.

   New problem, turned on the computer today and found that I have no internet connection at all.  Re-started the router, opened the internet and it is now requesting a user name and password for my air station.  It automatically takes me to 192.168.11.1 and I am unable to log-in.  I have be unable to access this page prior to this point and have not set a user name or password.  What do I do ??

Username = root (all lowercase)

Password = blank (i.e. nothing)

Once you enter those in you should be able to get to your configuration page.

I am back on line (yay!!) but still unable to log into my air station. It says the user name is root, but no matter what password I tried it doesn't work. I have tried leaving it blank, typing in password, etc. How do I get it reset? And also as far as I knew I didn't even have a password set, although I want to set one because my neighbors are getting on my connection.
