Title: Nested Shares or Directory Security Needed
Post by: mcguirerk on January 14, 2009, 03:37:32 PM

Model of Unit: Buffalo TS-HTG/R5 FW 1.33

There doesn't seem to be a way to create nested shares or set up directory security. Currently, I have to create a share for each directory I want to have different security levels on. This makes it very difficult to manage the NAS storage remotely and do backups. Does anyone know a way around this? The other question is if Buffalo is planning on updating their software in the future to provide this capability. Without a better security model, I will not purchase any more of these devices.

Unfortunately there is no way around it, you can only put restrictions on root level shares.

I am not sure if any feature FW version will enable multi-level security.

Hey, if you enable SSH and login as root, you can edit /etc/samba/smb.conf in a way which nests shares

I'm resurrecting this old thread since I just got my NAS and I couldn't find anything about how to do this so I started poking around.
