Title: Can not delete Linkstation Quad
Post by: jjrowan on September 26, 2011, 06:35:26 PM

I have a Linkstation quad 4TB NAS (3TB after RAID5).  I log in as Admin but can not delete files.  The directories are flagged as Read Only.  I have verified I have read / write access but attempts to delete only result in errors.  I had this problem 10 months ago when I initially set the unit up, I copied files from a customer onto it but files had strange characters in their names.  I could not delete them then so I formatted the array (took several days) and started over.  I reset everything again, just want to delete some duplicate files (several gigabytes worth).

You cannot use the user Admin to access the shares on the Linkstation. Create a seperate user and give it read/write access and it should work.

I had tried the other user name with read/write access to the same shares, they too can not delete or change the read-only attribute the duplicated folders.  I tried the top level folder of the duplicated (4000 + folders) and gone down to a single empty folder, I click to remove the read-only attribute, click apply, ok, go back and it's still read-only.

It sounds like you might have corrupted permissions and that a reset would fix this. Go to maintenance, initialization and then restore linkstation. You will want to apply permissions only through the web interface of the unit.

Are you suggesting wiping everything out and copying hundreds of gigabytes back onto the device?

Perhaps a bit more background information might be of use.  The Linkstation quad is written to by five external Linux servers using rsync through an ssh tunnel.    When I realized one of the external Linux servers duplicated the file system when it could not read a remote Windows server I changed the job to include the --delete attribute to have it remove files / folders on the Linkstation that weren't on the remote Windows machine.  The cron job shows it deleting the files on the Linkstation but they don't get deleted.  That's when I tried logging in as Admin and the other defined user to try to get my Windows XP workstation to delete the files / folders without success.  I also tried deleting from the local Linux server which nfs mounts the Linkstation so it can write the data from the Linkstation to a tape robots I have.

No I am not suggesting that. This option will restore the settings on the unit, keep the data, and possibly solve the issue.

Well, I did as you suggested, the Linkstation rebooted, reset Admin password, assigned itself a DHCP address and retained the data.  I redefined the IP address, established a password for Admin, recreated an ID for myself (other than Admin), gave that ID read / write access to the problem area and still can not delete the duplicated files / folders.  I tried umounting the Linux server that has that share NFS mounted, still could not delete or change attributes on the Windows XP workstation.  Remounted the folder with NFS on the Linux box, tried deleting empty folder, permission denied.  Tried chmod -R 777 emptyfolder name, said permissions are 755 and can't establish 777.

I wish I could help you more but I am not familear with how linux functions or how that linux box effected the files.

You can use this tool.

Someone suggested using long path tool but that requires purchase and I am skeptical as trying to delete a test file I created called test.txt it can not be removed using Windows, Linux, DOS.  This is a Buffalo problem, not a long file name problem.  It is only in this folder as the other five folders written to exactly the same way can have files created, rsync'd then deleted when removed from the source system.   The problem is getting critical as the files on the quadstation are around 70 gigabytes where source is 10 gigabytes.  I don't want to buy another quadstation to start all over as I don't know if this is a problem with the device / firmware itself.    Someone from Buffalo needs to look at this and participate in this issue.
