Title: Backing up Linkstation to Fat32 USB drive
Post by: taillessmonkey on September 30, 2008, 09:10:31 PM

I have a scheduled backup from my Linkstation to a USB drive, formatted with Fat32.  I get an error message "An error occurred during backup" but it seems like it was successful.  All of the files are on the destination drive.  The errors in the log file are "rsync: failed to set times on..."

Is this a problem with the file system on the destination drive?

I would like to keep Fat32 on the USB drive so I can plug into a Windows machine in a pinch.

Any way to do this backup without these pesky errors AND keep Fat32?

Would formatting with one of the other file systems fix this issue?

Thanks!

If you formatted it to XFS it would solve the error.  If you Google it you will find programs that allow a windows machine to read XFS file structure.

I have googled XFS / Windows etc. and get nowhere with finding a reader.  I see a lot of EXT2 and EXT3, but none for XFS.   Can you direct me to where there might be one?

My Linkstation Duo is DOA with an RMA --- and several days before I get a replacement.  I have all my data backed up to a USB drive in XFS format and need to access it now rather than later....

Help.

Thanks.

Adam

There is no fix for this. You CAN use FAT32 but in all likelyhood you WILL receive errors. As long as the linkstation runs XFS and you backup  to a FAT drive this cannot be remedied.

Thanks.... All I want to do right now is take my XFS-formatted USB drive that was attached to my now dead Linkstation and attach it to either my Windows XP or Vista laptop to access a few of my files. I haven't even attempted it yet because of the other posts I've read.... but I guess I'll just give it a shot.
