Title: TeraStation III - Shared directory access
Post by: Eric_26 on August 22, 2011, 04:47:07 AM

Hi all,

I'm using a Buffalo Terastation III and i'm unable to reach a shared directory with a local user account. The storage is registered in an AD domain but I can't use AD users authentication (more than 1000 entries).

If i put the storage into a workgroup (deleting from AD), it's no more reachable through the LAN.

I've created a new shared directory with restricted acces to a local user. On a Windows client machine, if i want to access this shared directory, a login and password is asked but refred to the AD. If I fill this [TeraStation name]\[local user name] and the related password, a connexion error occurs : Unable to access shared resources.

This same shared directory without access restriction set is fully visible and accessible from this same Windows machine.

Why can't I use local users account to access a specific shared directory ? Is there something to do to fix this problem ?

Thx in advance.

It's most likely a security or configuration on your server. Which version of server are you running and have you tried changing your NTLM settings?

Thx for your reply !

Do you mean about my AD server ? It's a Windows 2003 server and I can't change NTLM settings on it because I've no access to it. The Terastation is well known on my LAN and correctly declared in AD. I think it's a bad configuration of the Terastation but i'm unabled to find what to do to fix it.

I'll accept all advices you can give :smileywink:

Hmm... The NTLM settings may be the key here. But what firmware version are you running? Have you tried to simply update the firmware and restore the configuration settings?

Well... I'm running the 1.52 firmware. I've done the firmware update when i bought the NAS. But right now, i've check for new firmware and I found the new 1.54 release (post date : 07/07/2011). I'll dowload it and update my Terastation as soon as possible.

I hope that fix the problem and don't loose any thing.

I'll reply when update is done.

Just one word about firmware 1.54:

I've read the release note and changelogs don't mention any fix on NTLM or other access issues. I'll apply the update anyway.

Upgrade from firmware version 1.52 to 1.54 successfully done. But the issue still remains...

I'm actually using a Win 7 station and I can't access a shared folder with local user restriction. So I tried from an Win XP station... And It works !

I've checked the LAN security options (about NTLM) on my Win 7 station according to this article  : http://www.digitalquery.com/2006/09/vista_and_buffalo_terastation.html

My LAN manager authentication is set to : "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated" and the reg. key "LMCompatibilityLevel" is set to 1. After rebooting the computer, it's still the same problem :smileysad:

Is there anything I can do more ?

Thank you !
