I remotely manage a linkstation. In the event power is lost for more than the length of the battery backup, when power is returned the linkstation does not automatically power back on. Is this normal? Is there anyway to make it do that? The problem is that if the people forget to turn it back on then the backups do not start working again, so until I realize the drive had been turned off I can't ask them to turn it back on.
What can I do about this?
Thanks,
Dave
By default this machine will not boot back up to avoid multiple brown outs.
I can pass the request up to corporate to make the change, however I can not promise that will be added to a new firmware.
Hello,
This is a must have feature for me with 3 of my customers: Their main NAS is a TeraStation Pro which auto recovers following a power failure when connected to a UPS. Linkstation Pro's are used as backup devices and are in physically secure locations to protect from fire or theft so access can be very difficult. The Terastations recover perfectly following a power failure but the Linkstation Pros need to be turned on: embarrassing considering the money they have spent!
If this could be added to a future firmware release it would be very helpful!
Many thanks,
Alaric
I'm in the same boat. I need to have these things power up as soon as power is applied, or a rocker on/off swith like you would have on a real NAS or SAN. Seems like there could be a jumper on the motherboard or something for this. The way that it works now is more like something a home user would have. Until the power on issue is worked out I would recommend users not purchasing these except to home use. The two that I've got deployed with different customers have bitten us on this issue.
Per pre-sales support questions I asked regarding the LSXH10TL:
# Do any NAS devices have auto power on yet? Or perhaps Wake On LAN?
The Auto-Power feature on the newer units (LS-XHL included) will keep the device powered on while a computer running the NASNavigator software is running. The "NAS PM Service" part of the NASNavigator software sends a set of three WOL magic packets to the device every 20-30 seconds. When the device is set on "Auto" power mode, it will look for these packets, and if it doesn't receive a WOL packet for around 380 seconds, it will suspend until it receives another WOL packet.
I am also in the same boat as these members, with an exception. I am currently running 2 LinkStation Pros. the main one is on a battery backup device and is controlled by the battery, the other is connected to the battery side but has no way of controlling the shutdown options. If at all possible, I feel the LinkStations should be able to communicate with each other via USB cable or link cable that would allow for multiple LinkStations and other products from Buffalo to communicate with each other in a circumstance such as this. This is just a friendly suggestion and I, along with other people, I'm sure, would like to see with these devices. Other than this issue, I have no complaints about these devices. Great job Buffalo!
Your suggestion has been submitted previously, however I will state that these NAS products cannot currently support USB to USB communication. The only thing that we have that comes close to that is the DriveStation FlexNet. My apologies for the inconvenience. :(
