Title: KB#000235 - Windows XP SP2 or SP3 can not see the full size of the Quattro 4TB Drivestation
Post by: mikeyngo on December 19, 2008, 12:35:46 PM
   REGION: All

ISSUE: Windows XP does not see the full size of the 4TB Quattro DriveStation

CAUSE:   Issues with Windows XP can not see more than 2TB drive size.

PLATFORM(S): 4TB Quattro DriveStation

SOLUTION:

Step 1

1. Use a computer with VISTA or other OS that supports GPT disk

2. Attach the Quattro 4TB DriveStation using a USB cable and set RAID 5 using the Buffalo utility

3. Let the Raid build

4. Power down the Quattro DriveStation.

5. Attach the Quattro 4TB DriveStation using ESATA and power up

6. Convert to Dynamic disk type (Disk Management console, right-click the MBR drive you want to convert to GPT and click Convert to GPT Disk) or use DISKPART utility

I have followed this instructions and it still shows up as two partition one 2 tb and another 750 gig.  I have convert it to GPT using VISTA, however I do not have a eSATA connection.  Is it required for me to partition it to 3 TB RAID 5?  Please help...

Same also goes with XP.  I also purchased GPT Mounter and I cannot get it to see 3 TB... Please anyhelp in this matter.  Would I need a USB to eSATA card for my laptop to work?

PLEASE HELP

Thank you

I have solved my issue using VISTA showing up as 3TB.  However, I cannot have it show up correctly in XP.  I have followed these steps:

Step 2

1. Start by buying GPT mounter http://shop.mediafour.com/ProductCart/pc/MainIndex.asp SKU GP10-E0WR-ESD

2. Install it on your XP machine

3. Power down the computer and the Quattro 4TB Drivestation.

4. Attach the Quattro 4TB DriveStation using ESATA and power up both the computer and the Quattro.

5. You should now be able to see the drives as one big drive.

6. Always power up the Drive Station first and always power down the computer first when ESATA attached.

However, I do not have a eSATA connection on my laptop.  Is it needed to show correctly in XP?  I only have USB.  I have purchased the GPT mounter and it is a waste of money if this does not work.

Any help is appreciated.  Thanks.

I can run some more tests here in our labs, its possible you just need the Esata to set it up, then you can use USB.  I will find out and post again.

Thank you for your response and help. Yeah please do your test. It would clear a lot of questions regarding these vague steps. Honestly I don't see any reason why I would need a esata for xp to see the 3tb. I'm able too see my 3 tb drive in vista fine using USB.. Yeah thank again and I will be waiting for your answer...

Vista has this issue resolved within the OS, however XP does not.  I am still waiting for the write up from the lab.

Yeah Vista has support for GPT but Xp doesn't.  However, I just purchased GPT mounter for $20 dollars to use for XP and it still does not work...  I also read on the GPT Mounter description is that it does not support above 2 TB... So what is the point of purchasing it?

Esata is necessary for this to work.

Thank you for your reply Paul.  So I would need a ESATA card for my laptop to work.  How about the GPT Mounter for XP which is required for me to purchase.  Is that still needed?  I read on the GPT website that it doesn't support more than 2 TB, however in the buffalo steps, it is required to install.

I just want to clarify somethings for myself and others regarding this matter.  I did purchase the software, however it was no use since it didn't recognize the partitions correctlty without the ESATA connection.

I will purchase the ESATA card tonight and will post results later.

Thank you again Paul.
