Title: LS-CHL not visible on NasNavi2 on MAC
Post by: Snaques on August 29, 2010, 10:16:32 AM

I finally got the LS to show up on all other devices (Win Xp, Win7, PS3, LCD TV), but I am still having problems with a Mac.

I seem to have similar problem to what I had with Win 7, where the LS can be found through the IP but is not visible through NasNavi2 or Network. This means that I cannot use it.

Any ideas what could be the problem?

So by clicking on Go (in Finder)->Connect to Server->type in AFP://[IP_of_NAS] that doesn't work?

Yes, exactly.

I have a finnish Mac OS so I don't know the exact message, but when I try your approach it says roughly the following:

"Connection failed

Server doesn't exist or it is not active at the moment. Please check the servers name or IP-address and try again."

The silly thing is that if I put the same IP-address into Safari address bar, I can connect the web access every time. Any ideas?

EDIT: Actually that was what happened when I put only the IP-address. When I put the AFP:// part before the IP-address, the address is added to the list but I don't know if it is found or not. At least I cannot browse it in any way.

What I didn't mention as an alternative would be to try SMB in the place of AFP.

Ok, the SMB results in the same error message as when I tried to input just the IP-address.

With AFP:// it shows in the list of favourite servers, but nothing happens when I press connect. When I press browse, it opens the file browser for networks, but nothing comes up.

I'm not sure if AFP died on the NAS however if SMB isn't working on the Mac but is on the PC then it has to be the Mac.  Reason being is that the SMB protocol doesn't differ between platforms.  You could try rebooting the Mac and if that doesn't yield a result then initializing the NAS back to factory defaults would be the next step.

Yup, no improvement after reboot.

By the way, what is this SMB protocol? Where is it used in the PC world? How do I know if it is working on the PC?

This protocol is completely new to me as is AFP. I must say though that the Mac is my girlfriend's so I'm not familiar with that world.

I know that my LS is visible through HTTP on Win XP, Win 7 and Mac.

SMB is what Windows platforms utilize when you type in \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx if you want more information I haven't found anything more reliable than a good ol Wikipedia article.  The same issue occurs when you're hardwired to the router with the Mac?

Ok I still haven't solved this, but I have now more info of what does not work. :)

I have tried connecting to the Mac to WAN with a cable. I have connected the MAC directly to LS. I have tried usin AF_//IP, SMB://IP, SMB://NAME and of course the normal WLAN through airport. In none of these scenarios did I manage to make the LS visible on the NasNavi or Network folder.

Any idea what I should try next?

Basically, if it's working for other devices on your network and not your Mac I don't think I have any further insight as to why mainly because SMB doesn't differ between the platforms.  SMB works on the Windows machines, but not on the Mac however there's no difference between how they operate when interfacing with the NAS.  I never got info on what version of NAS Navi that you are running.  I know that the older versions were a bit "sketchy" with their NAS detection.

On Mac the NasNavi is ver 2.26. On XP and Win 7 it is ver 2.22.

On Mac I can ping the LS and use the web access, but that's it.

EDIT: One thing I did notice was, that when I tried to use the Finder -> Go -> Connect to server and use the line SMB://192.168.0.1xx the OS showed some "conneting to server" window. In that window it says "Connecting to server afp://SMB//192.168.0.1xx". Is it correct that the address is automatically starting with afp://?

The SMB call in SMB://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx should be instruction enough for the Mac to connect via SMB.  However, if this protocol isn't used on the Mac then it could be automatically switching to AFP.  When you access the Shared Folders section of the GUI do any of the folders have Apple access enabled?  Is the AFP network service running in the Network section on the NAS?

The MAC is my girlfriend's so I'm not very familiar with the OS. What do you mean by the Shared folders section and is the Apple access shown in their properties?

The Shared Folder settings in the Web GUI should be the section defaulted to after logging in to the NAS configuration page successfully.

Oh, you meant tthe Web access GUI. Yes, I have checked the Apple access and it is turned on for the shared folder.

I've been calling Buffalo and Apple support hotlines a couple of times without any success.

However, after browsing through Internet I actually managed to make some progress. I wrote a small script using the following command:

mount volume "smb:/[IP_ADDRESS]"

In that way I managed to get the LS visible in the Mac file browser!

I'm not familiar with the ApleScript so I still don't know how to make this "cleanly". Any ideas how I can get the solution permanent without any dirty macros?
