Hi, I've got one of the original TeraStation 1TB models (HD-H1-0TGL/R5 running firmware 1.12) and am trying to attach an external USB drive. I've done this successfully in the past with several other drives, but this new one is giving me fits. I think the issue is related to drive format.
The drive is a Fantom GreenDrive II, 2TB. It arrived formatted as NTFS. I wanted my TeraStation to be able to write to the drive, so I reformatted it to FAT32, thinking this would solve my problem. I tried writing a file to the new drive while attached to the TeraStation and it gave me the error about permissions. So I tried XFS formatting, which worked. However I then discovered I couldn't plug the drive into my Windows laptops and read/write to it (I need to be able to grab the drive and take it with me on the road occasionally, so being able to read/write from Windows is important).
So, I concluded it may not be possible to have read/write from both Windows and the TeraStation, and decided to just format it back to NTFS (the way my other external drives are formatted) and live with not being able to write from the TeraStation, only read. I formatted the drive with NTFS while attached directly to a Windows laptop (took hours) and copied some test files over, plugged it into the TeraStation and tried to read the files. The TeraStation can see that the drive is attached, but when I look inside the drive it says it's empty. When I check the TeraStation admin screen it shows the drive is attached but mysteriously says it's formatted FAT, not NTFS like my other drives.
I'm not sure what to do now. What format should I use? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Dan
Is the external USB drive running one or two drives (RAID?)? The NAS won't play nice with an external that is running its own RAID. Furthermore, if the USB disk is formatted to NTFS (and not running a RAID) your best case scenario would be having the ability to read only from the USB. If that's not even happening there may be a limit on the size of external drive the NAS can associate with but I don't recall off the top of my head.
