Title: Map Network Drive.......
Post by: BostonMike on December 03, 2008, 01:42:19 PM

Hi all,

I have a  Linkstation EZ and I have it connected to my router so that I can use it on the network. I mapped a network drive to the shared folder. It works fine but if I restart the computer it does not automatically connect. I made sure that I selected connect as different user and I made it the administrator on the Linkstation. I also selected re connect at logon.

I have this problem on 2 different computers both using Windows Vista Home Preimum. I don't have this problem on my XP Sp3 computer.

Any ideas or help would be appreciated. Thanks,

-Mike

Go to my computer tools then map network drive then map it via IP address \\IP_of_NAS\folder name

I have the same issue with my Vista box and this fix did not work.  Any other ideas?

FWIW it did not work for me either. I just keep having to log in every time the computer restarts.

Give this a shot and please bear in mind this is the Vista process it's slightly different for XP:

1. Click on Start->Control Panel

2. In Control Panel go to User Accounts

3. In the left side of the window under Tasks choose "Manage your network passwords"

4. Click on the "Add..." button in the resulting window

5. Fill out the information:

Log on to: "\\[IP_Address_of_NAS]" (found in the NAS Navi utility minus quotes)

    User: [User_name_for_NAS_access]

    Password: [Password_for_NAS_access]

6. Make sure the credential type is a "Windows logon credential" and click OK

7. Restart the computer and try and access the NAS by IP address

Hopefully, this should work for you. If not please post back and let me know where you're stuck.

Ahh the Vista blues....

I followed your advice, but Vista will not let me use the "Windows logon credential" option, it is greyed out and I can only use "A website or program credential".

There is a change however: now when I select the NAS drive, I am presented with the login box but the user name has an entry which is

"Inspiron530/ADMIN".  Inspiron530 is the name of my computer on the network....so this tells me that Windows is trying to connect to the server but not hitting the right ID.  Any further thoughts?   (Please don't say I have to install XP!!!!)

I wonder if you created a user on the NAS drive "Inspiron530/ADMIN" if that would work?

Here is an idea I found online I will try when I get home tonite!

Unlike XP, apparently Vista "Home" flavors are disabled and do not remember passwords for network share drives.

Some folks have suggested manually adding the drive to the "Manage Network Passwords" dialog within Control Panel : User Access. Frustratingly, this doesn't work, as the feature is actively disabled in Vista. I've tried most methods and found no amount of fiddling will get it to work. The one way that consistently works to fix this annoyance is a short log-on script. You can use Notepad to create the file.

Set objNetwork = CreateObject("WScript.Network")
objNetwork.MapNetworkDrive "Z:", "\\PCName\SharedFolder", , "username", "password"

Save the file as "PCName.vbs", where PCName is the name of the drive sharing host in your start-up directory located, where "UserName" is your log in name:

C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\St art Menu\Programs\Startup

This did not work I'm getting a syntax error on the left quotes on the first line.  Anybody know how to make this script work?
