Title: Terastation II Pro Emergency Mode -- Flashed Firmware, no RAIDs
Post by: StrangeWill on June 19, 2010, 12:59:39 PM

So box went into emergency mode, flashed the firmware, now it's not picking up the RAIDs.

I can put them in a linux box and recover the data that way, but this is for a client, so that would involve me unplugging my linux server and taking it to the client's site (lots of data), so I'd rather get the terastation back up and running.

I do not have enough onsite storage to unload the data and rebuild the RAID and move it back.

The box keeps going into Disk check mode after about 5 minutes since I boot it. So I'm given some time to dig around but then the box just becomes unruly.

These are 1TB drives, so a disk check of all 4 disks may take... days... this is reasonable but only if I can get the RAID going again, otherwise I'll just mount them in Linux and transfer the data.

How would I force a drive configuration on this box? On the Linux box I just do an :"mdadm -a /dev/sdc5 /dev/sdd5, etc." Is there a way to replicate this action on the terastation without messing with the firmware?

Will building a new RAID 5 format the disks, or just try to mount the disks if they're already formatted?

If you forcefully rebuild the raid it will format all of the drives.  You can check the disk mgt part of the admin GUI to see if "restructure the raid" is an option, as opposed to creating a new raid.  As for specific commands there is not a way to input commands into the TS.  so the Linux command would only work on the Linux server that you own.
