Title: LS-CH500L changing for a 1TB drive, no spin-up, red flashin
Post by: matth3w on June 15, 2010, 07:03:53 PM

Hello,

I just bought a LS-CH500L, don't know it's a v1 or v2

So, I also purchased a Seagate Barracude 7200.12, ST31000528AS. It also says

 +5V 0.72A, +12V 0.52A.

However, on the Samsung drive(originally came from the LS-CH500L, 500GB), it says

 +5V,0.7A, +12V, 0.5A

When I replaced the 1TB drive into it, the drive spins up(I can hear the spinning sound), but only for a few seconds, and then no more sound. Not even vibrating when I touch it.

LED becomes red and flashing. Could not register on the local network.

The 1TB drive works fine when attached to a desktop.

The power adapter for the LS-CH500L outputs +12V and 2A DC power.

For the reason, is it because the 1TB drive needs more A to power up?

What about use a power adapter that outputs more As? 3A?

Thank you guys so much!

have you tftp'd the initrd and uimage to it

you wouldnt expect a pc to boot into windows with a new blank drive on it

the same with a nas

Thanks for your reply.

For the power issue, I just plugged a AC adapter that written "12V, 4.5A 5A 6A(0-6A)" into the LS-CHL but the 1TB drive keep stopping after a few second spinning.

And before I connect the new 1TB drive to the LS-CHL, I connected it to Windows and formatted it for a NTFS drive. Anything wrong with this?

If you are using it in the Buffalo enclosure the mainboard will need to communicate with the drive, in otherwords.  NTFS will not work, the drive will need to be in XFS or EXT3 format to work as a NAS device.  As previously mentioned a TFTP boot will be req'd to get the image onto the drive for proper communication with the main board.  TFTP can be found here http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Storage/FAQ-3-of-4-TFTP-boot-procedure-please-read-this/td-p/11015  .Please note that by swapping the drives the warranty is voided.

A further clarification - the FW for the LS is on the drive in a separate partition, not the enclosure's logic board.  If replacing the HDD, you'll need to install the FW on the HDD by using the TFTP method.  A HDD formatted outside the LS, will not have the FW to run the unit, once installed in the LS.

Are you sure on this? Because the new HDD stop spinning after a few second.

there's a simple way to find out

plug it all up

turn it on

setup tftp server on your pc

press the front button on the nas when the red light is flashing

see if the drive spins up after taking the files
