Title: Linkstation goes into EM-mode spontaneously. How to recover data?
Post by: Bart on June 05, 2010, 10:50:14 AM

My Linkstation Live is showing the following problem, which I have not found an adequate solution for anywhere on this forum.

After starting the device the blue led blinks for aprox. 3 minutes and for the first 2,5 minutes I cannot access the Linkstation through the NASNavigator. From the moment I am able to access the Linkstation I clearly hear the sound of the hard disk activity, which stops after a couple of minutes after which I cannot access the drive any more and it shows EM-mode in the NASNavigator. Again shortly after the Linkstation does not show at all in the NASNavigator and cannot be found. All the time the led on the device stays blue. The only thing I can do is unplug the Linkstation and restart after which the same sequence repeats.

My main problem right now is that I have important data on the disk that I cannot take off since the disk loses connection after a couple of minutes. When trying to download the data from the device after around 500 to 600 MB I get an error message that the connection is lost and since most of my data are video files of more than 600 MB I cannot download these.

After reading the forum I have already tried the following things:

- I have linked the Linkstation directly to my computer through a crosslink UTP cable.

- I have restarted the device in EM mode and have updated the firmware to version 1.26 with debug option on without rebuilding partition table.

- I have connected an USB drive directly to the Linkstation to try to copy the data directly from the Linkstation to the USB device.

All of the above actions did not lead to a satisfying result.

This are the details of my Linkstation and computer:

Linkstation Live LS1.0TL-V2, firmware 1.26, bought less than 4 months ago

Computer HP Pavilion dv7, running on Windows Vista sp2

I sure hope that there is anyone who can help me solve this problem, or at least suggest an option how to safe my data so I can try to format the complete disk or bring it back to the shop since it is still under guarantee.

All help is appreciated...

If you unit is showing it is in EM Mode, then you will need to Flash the firmware.  If the firmware flash is successful then you will be back in working order. If not the unit should give you an error message, depending on the error we can provide data recovery instructions.

It looks like you have already tried the main steps we would recommend. How long have you had the unit? Do you get any sort of error when updating the firmware, or does it seem to go through?

Thank you for your replies.

@Night3: I have flashed the firmware, but unfortunately with no result. The device does not give any error message.

@sethz: I do not get any error while updating the firmware and at the end I get the message that the update was succesfull.

After contacting the Buffalo helpdesk I have tried the following steps. I have done another flash of firmware, but this time with option "delete user-config" also checked. And I have downgraded the firmware to v. 1.24. The thing now is that the device does not go into EM mode anymore, but while the NAS Navigator does find the device I am not able to open the shared folder. In the web interface I keep on getting an username/password error, using the admin login with many different passwords (including my old password, the standard "password" and leaving it blank).

Were you able to get the drive working again and did you recover the data?  I have the same issue and am looking for a solution.  Appreciate any update and good luck,

@nsaxena: Unfortunately I did not get the disk back to work. At the end it was replaced by Buffalo for a new one. I managed to recover most of my files though, through copying with the help of the program TeraCopy. Besides that it copied the files much more quickly than Windows Explorer, it also has the possibility to resume broken off copies, which meant that I could copy larger files in several attempts.

Hope this helps and good luck...
