Title: Backing up NAS
Post by: sobo1234 on May 23, 2010, 10:56:10 AM

Hey all....

So I recently got a Buffalo NAS device (1TB Linkstation Duo).  One reason I got it is so I could ditch Carbonite.com- the online backup I was paying for- I figured if the Buffalo device supported RAID, than why not just buy that and ditch Carbonite- which is what I did.  But, in some conversations with tech support- and I can see thier point- is that the Linkstation should also be backed up in case of failure- counds like data retrieval can be very pricey as well.    With that, I installed the Memeo software that came with the Linkstation, but the versaion that was included only backs up data on the computer it is installed on- you need to upgrade in order to backup network locations.  So I'm now back to where I was before- I need to backup this device and was wondering what people use- I know there's site like Dropbox.com that will back up 1GB for free, but I have at least 10GB of data that I want to back up.  SHould I got back to Carbonite?  SHould I upgrade to the better version of Memeo and backup the Linkstation to my Desktop??  Thoughts suggestions appreciated!

Thank!!

There are a series of options available to you for backing up, in addition to online backups windows XP Professional and beyond all have a built in backup utility.  Also such programs as Novastor can assist you as seeing the "Professional" version is a 5 user license pack, and there is a 15 day free trial of the program and does have any limitations except for the 15 days

TeraCopy is free and knows how to do a compare based on CRCs.

You can also connect the USB drive to the Linkstation Duo and have linkstation do an automatic backup for you.  You can read XFS and EXT3 files systems on a Windows PC, if you look for drivers (free).
