Title: LS-CHL: Twonky not keeping configuration changes
Post by: IrishCoffee on May 08, 2010, 01:39:22 PM

I have a LS-CHL V2 (red GUI) running F/W Version 1.26 with enabled Media Server.

Did change several values in the Twonky Config GUI on port 9050, such as scan period, foto resizing yes/no.

Changes are still in place after resetting Twonky Service via the GUI button "restart server".

But after sending entire LS sleeping and waking up again (WOL), the changed settings in Twonky are gone and replaced by the default values (scan period 60 seconds, foto resizing yes, etc.)

Version of the Twonky Media Server is reported as 4.4.19_e2, I believe it came along with the 1.26 Firmware.

What could I have done wrong ?

Appreciating every smallest hint, did already search the forum but without success.

Thanks / IrishCoffee

Good question. I think that's a normal behavior of the ls. It always does overwrite the configs after a restart. Not only Twonky will be overwritten.

The "samba/smb.conf" and the "proftpd.conf" for the FTP-Server as well.

What I know, the only way to change this, is to "hack" the firmware, so you have a possibility to activate telnet.

Than you have to create a new config file that will overwrite the original configs everytime the LS wakes up.

I am a totally Noob with Linux. So I'm not able to do this.

I would like to have a passwordcheck for Twonky. But this is not possible too, because if you do the configuration for "password" its will be gone after waking up.

Anyone else, any solutions ?

Many thanks for your reply, Latifa.

Hm interesting, I wonder what else is been overwritten after a restart. Fortunately the LS's core config such as shares and users shows to be non-volatile. So maybe some of the additional services like Twonky, Bittorent and Webaccess reset their config after restart ? Will try to test and report this behaviour.

Well I don't really want to hack into the stock unit, besides my Linux skills are literally Zero as well...

Can hardly believe that Buffalo designed this "feature" intentionally. Still hoping there is a smart way to keep the config, else the Mediaserver is practically useless although it works very good. I am generally very happy with the LS being my 3rd NAS.

Agree that the Twonky admin screens should be password protected, although in my home environment I will not "publish" or NAT the 9050 port anyhow.

Any more experiences with the config loss ?

Greetings from Austria

Quick update from my side:

Did successfully downgrade from 1.26 to 1.24 without loosing my NAS shares & files.

Can confirm Wuschi, that 1.24 does keep all modified Mediaserver configs after NAS restart.

So it must be a symptom specific to 1.26 - Hope Buffalo is going to consider a fix for the next release.

Thanks for your help !

Our engineers in Japan are now aware of the issue and are working on resolving it with the next revision of FW. I don't have a timeline for completion, but it is being worked on.

Great, many thanks for bringing this forward.

No prob for me to stay on the well working 1.24 for another while.

Question regarding the next revision....Does Buffalo generally maintain a public "ToDo" List with planned functional enhancements ?

I read a couple of serious user proposals in this forum and it would be interesting to which extent they might come true one day...

Thanks / IrishCoffee

Buffalo Technology does not keep a public to-do list, as our competitors would gain advantage from the list.

We request suggestions for features are posted in the Idea Exchange Lounge, to be voted on through Kudos.

One suggestion per post, so we know which idea is being kudoed.

The most popular rise to the top and these are considered by the Buffalotech engineers in Japan, so once posted, get as many friends and forum readers as you can, to vote for your idea (don't reply to your idea - request elsewhere that people vote on your ideas).
