Title: Can't access TeraStation
Post by: bleicht on May 07, 2010, 10:52:35 AM

I  have a TeraStation, model TS-2.0TGL/R5 with RAID5.  I came in the office today and it had an error message something about MDT, System Shutting down, but it would not shut down.  I powered the TeraStation off and then back on and then it would just sit at Loading Kernal.  At that point I could not ping, or access the TeraStaion at all.  I powered it off again and then it came back to Loading Kernal, then gave me error message about HD1 Error E23 and Operation Mode I12.  I replaced the drive, but the TeraStation did not resync RAID.  So it booted up, no error message, but I still cannot access at all and it looks like it does not see the new drive as configured in the raid.  Can someone give me directions on what I need to do to replace a bad drive and get the Raid setup again.  And will my data that is on this right now be safe or will it get wipped out when I reconfigure the Raid?

Are you able to log into the web administration?  If you are able to head over to disk management, there is an option for either repair or restructure the raid, any other option will wipe your data out.

No I can't log inot the web administration, it doesn't even find the web page.  So, I guess this means my RAID is toast and my data is lost?  Is there any suggestions on how to recover the data, possibly?

Does not mean the data is entirely lost, as for recovery there are professional services such as Drive Savers available, also there is a free trial of a program called UFS Explorer that is Windows/Linux based you can attach the drives to a machine running this program to see if the data is still present, if so, the program is purchasable, or contact a recovery professional.

So, is that the only option at this point?  Try to recover the data and then what?  How do I reconfigure the RAID?

To reconstruct the raid you can attempt to follow the procedure listed here http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Storage/FAQ-2-of-4-Force-Firmware-update-procedure-please-read-this/td-p/11011 if successful this should rebuild the firmware to the point that the web access is functional.

Thank you.  I will try that first.  What usually causes RAID to fail?

What kind of drive did you replace it with?

Western Digital 500GB drive is what I put in.  The original drive was Western Digital WD5000KS, 500GB.
