My HS-DHGL 500 fell off the desk and could no longer read shares. I removed the HDD and looked at it with Ubuntu - tried various recovery procedures without success - HDD is now useless - all data lost of course. I bought a new SATA 500Gb unit, fitted it into the Linkstation. Now, on powerup, I get 6 red flashes and an alternating beep. Router can see the unit but NAS Navigator cannot find it.
I can take the new HDD out again and connect it to a PC, where I could format it and create new partitions. How do I get the firmware on to it so that it will work when I put it back into the Linkstation?

Right on - thank you. It'll take me a little while, but I'll report back.
Carried out TFTP procedure exactly as described. Report was for uImage 3584 blocks served, initrd 8604 blocks served.
The LS appears to be still in the state I described above: E06, beeping, and unrecognised by NASNavi.
Should I perhaps have formatted and/or partitioned the new HDD before installing it in the LS?
It couldn't hurt although I would recommend against partitions. Use a program like DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) to wipe the drive to zeros and try again.
