Title: Cannot access external USB drive connected to LinkStation HD-H250LAN
Post by: ipguy on April 28, 2010, 09:07:50 AM

I have been using this LinkStation for a while.  It's running firmware version 2.05.  I just attached a new Western Digital Elements 500GB USB drive for backup.  The LinkStation sees the drive under USB Setup with these parameters:

USB Class      Manufacturer           Device Name      USB2.0/USB1.1

Storage            Western Digital       External HDD      USB 2.0

I enabled it under USB Disk Setup.  However, there is no shared folder and no selection for it in the drop down lists for Disk Scan and Disk Format.  Following a post on this forum, I reformatted the drive to XFS, but that does not work.  Then I found a post for this same problem with this same NAS that suggested EXT3 or FAT32, but neither of them work.  I'm stuck.  Does anyone have anything else I might try?  Thanks.

if you are trying to use this drive as an external device for added storage?  if that is the case this will not work, the drives are primarily used as a device to backup the NAS device, if you try to set a backup job does the USB drive appear at that point?

I want to use it for backing up the NAS, but it does not show up anywhere accept under USB Details.  There is no shared folder under Shared Folder Setup and when I go to Disk Backup in Maintenance, it tells me, "A valid backup device does not exist."

I forced a firmware update (still 2.05) but no change.
