Title: DriveStation Combo 4 and eSATA
Post by: Batz_Junior on April 16, 2010, 08:47:42 AM

I have a DriveStation Combo 4 and try to connect it via eSATA to my Laptop. A few days ago I reinstalled Windows7 64bit and also the newest Intel Chipset Driver. AHCI is also set in the BIOS.

Connecting the drive via eSATA generally works as well as copying small files. But when I try to copy a large file (~3GB) the copy process starts and interrupts after a few seconds and I get the message that the copy process failed. If I have a look into the Explorer I can't find my DriveStation there anymore. Turning it off and on again brings it back to the Explorer.

Any idea what it could depends on?

Was the device working prior to re-installing the OS?

Prior to reinstalling Win7 the drive also didn't work. I had installed Windows Vista 32 bit on my Laptop.

What file system does the unit have?  If you can delete the partition, create a new partition and format it to NTFS.

At the very beginning I formated my disk to NTFS. Do you think it could help to format it again?

There could be possible file corruption or something of that nature.  Reformatting it will definetly clear out the file system corruption if that is the case.

This happens to me on all of my drivesations on my Mac's also. I don't think it has anything to do with the formating. I think there is somthing wrong with the esata on these units. I have 5 umits al displaying this behavior.

Are you formatting the device via the eSATA connection?  Formatting must first be carried out via USB then you may read/write data via eSATA.  The only caveat for eSATA is that it cannot handle formatting.
