Title: LS-WXL fails to reboot after firmware update
Post by: DJFramboise on January 10, 2026, 09:59:01 AM
I have a Buffalo LS-WXL Linkstation. It wen into Emergency Mode some time ago. After a reboot and a reboot of my PC, it was/is sometimes visible (in EM) and sometimes not. I tried to update the firmware and this seems to succeed but then fails to reboot after installation. Linkstation then is not seeable in navigator. I have checked the disks and data appears intact. I'm not sure where to go next. Any suggestions?

Do you have a backup of the data on your linkstation?

Are these the settings in your LSupdater.ini file?  If not, back up that file and add these as shown below:

[Flags]
VersionCheck = 0
NoFormatting = 1

[SpecialFlags]
Debug = 1

right click the menu bar at the top and you should see a debug mode, you can check all the boxes.  But this WILL wipe out any data already on it, quite possibly.  I think the noformatting prevents it from formatting, but it also may not make the update work.  That might need to be 0 and I bet yours is at 0 already.

Just be careful with these settings, because it can wipe out whatever is on the Linkstation.

Not sure how you are trying to do the update, with TFTP or what exactly.  But from my notes here, the problem you seem to have is that the WXL needs the TFTP boot blocks again.

-----

My old TFTP notes, these should help if you have the TFTP files for your unit.

PC 1 - main workstation pc
PC 2 - second pc - media center, laptop, test box, whatever

disable windows firewall on both PCs during the update process

All PCs and NAS - on local network/switch

PC 2 - 192.168.11.1 / 255.255.255.0 - firewall disabled, run tftp app - as admin
PC 1 - DHCP, local network
NAS - powered off, plugged into switch on the same network

Verify all items are connected to LAN, nothing should be directly connected to the NAS

tftp app running on PC2
turn on NAS, red error lights blink - hold reset for 30 secs, it will boot
verify 2 sets of blocks are sent from tftp on PC2
unit grabs a dhcp address after it boots

after a few mins, use nasnavi on PC1, find nas
run firmware update, right click, check all boxes on right side
start update

then, older models have problems rebooting nas during update
it freaks out, needing the tftp blocks again...

shut the nas unit off.
close out tftp on PC2, reopen it.
keep PC2 on the 192.168.11.1 address
turn unit back on, hold the reset for 30 secs again...
verify 2 sets of blocks are sent from PC2 again...

unit should start flashing orange, 2 long - 5 short - indicating firmware is updated.
it loses connection to the update app for whatever reason.  you can close and reopen it.
