Title: Terastation Boot from HDD0
Post by: ADampWedgie on February 14, 2025, 11:24:44 PM
Hey All,

Kind of at wits end and not sure what to do here. I have a TS-6VH12TL/R6 (yea it's an old guy), and for some strange reason i decided to firmware update it last night from 1.32 to the latest. Well now It's stuck at Boot from HDD0 and i'm at a loss. We had no issues prior to the upgrade and i'm unsure what happened. I'd love to just run the update manually via USB, but i'm having trouble even getting that going. I've downloaded the latest FW from the support site but it doesn't state much on how to create a bootiso for something this old. Any guidance appreciated.

I do want to add i created a grub based image from these set of instructions: https://buffalonas.miraheze.org/wiki/Create_Recovery_Disk_for_Intel-based_Terastation

However, device is now just sitting on boot from USB-HD

Hooking up a monitor is the easy way to see whats going on.

I reworked that process with syslinux a while a go since grub can be a pain

I've even posted a pre-generated image. You just need to add your boot files to it

Thank you for the quick reply, it looks like after leaving it for 12+ hours it did boot up. Sifting through some old reddit threads, i believe when you see " Terastation Boot from HDD0 " on some of these older guys, it can actually be doing an array check (or something similar). Checking the logs (now that i have access), i see:

Feb 15 04:16:48 PlexNAS libsys: diskinfo status is BAD!(first boot?) rebuilding diskinfo.
~~~~~~~~~~
Feb 15 05:49:31 PlexNAS kernelmon: cmd=raidresync 1 0 0 0
Feb 15 05:49:31 PlexNAS handle-mdadm-events: RebuildFinished, /dev/md1,
Feb 15 05:49:31 PlexNAS handle-mdadm-events: set_syncstatus : arrayNo=0
Feb 15 05:49:42 PlexNAS handle-mdadm-events: lcd_error_man.sh array0_raid_error off(old error code)
Not entirely sure what happened, but do notice some performance issues following all this. I think it may be time to finally put this guy out to pasture.
Related, is there any obvious place to see the SMART information regarding drive health ?
All of the above scream hard drive issue.
well, the thing saying hdd boot 0 when you tried usb booting screams "need to flip switch on the back to usb booting screams first"
Not sure about smart data in stock UI. Should be able to use smartctl from command line or booting linux etc
