I think I have a network Samba communication issue between my old HS-DHTGL-R5 (firmware ver. 2.14) and my new Mac Mini M4.

At first I thought I must have forgotten my login ID and password. I tried every possible password I thought I might have used.  No luck whatsoever and only a rising frustration level to equal a volcano eruption.
So press the red switch when all else fails.  So ------> back to admin and password.  Nothing ... nada ... a zero result.

Also I downloaded NAS Nav2.  The Nav see the drive.  tells me the capacity is 4 TB and I am at 85%.  When I try the button to play the "find me" meleody it works and asks me for the password and that's OK because its now the default being "password"  This works a treat.  But login?  NO WAY ON EARTH.

So what to do lah?  I resurrected an old G4 Mac Book pro and bingo!  I could get to the root. Go to a user folder and the User ID was fine and the password was also fine.  I was in.  So now I have the root admin and password and know for a fact that the user ID and password on a directory is perfect as well.  So the unit works fine.

It now is obvious that an issue exists between the new M4 computer and the TeraSation that uses Samba.

Can anyone help me please?    Pieter.

UPDATE: 
Possible reason .... I read on Apple Forums that with Catalina onward Apple dropped support for Samba 1 & 2 and only support SMB 3.  This sounds like it might be the cause for what I am experiencing.  So far I have not seen any workaround changing something in the Mac to provide support for SMB 1.  The recommendations all seem to be pointed towards updating the NAS. 

This leads to the next question.  Is there a way to update the TeraSation to SMB 3?

The HS-DHTGL-R5 is what? 20 years old? Wholly insecure and doesn't support anything past SMB1 which any MAC from the last 5 years doesn't support.

Move on and get a new device.

No.

The mainline linux kernel will still boot on that model, making it technically possible to run modern stuff on it. I think last time I tried it running a network benchmark hit 100% cpu at 0.5Gbps or so. 128mb isn't a lot of memory to work with either.

Silly? on,yes. Impossible? not literally, but nearly.

Was able to get like 0.7Gbps from a quick test

quick transfer test over smb3 was able to get 25MB/s
