Title: Recover RAID array not working
Post by: grillbuf on July 23, 2024, 12:12:37 PM
I have a LS420D with 2 drives. It reported Disk 2 failed. The drive is still working though as it is on RAID1.

Following the instructions from the website, I purchased a replacement, swapped the disks, then went to the web interface.  I selected both disks and clicked "Recover RAID Array" and get the error message "A system error occured. Reboot the LinkStation and try configuring it again."

I rebooted and still get that error message.

It is out of warranty so I cannot contact tech support. What should I do?

Also: If its a US system we have an out-of-warranty email queue with a 72 hour SLA. Put your serial number in at buffalotech.com/support to get to that.

From experience, you may have to clear any existing partitions on the drive if it already has some.

The drive is properly unformatted and raw. You cannot select "Recover RAID Array" if it isn't. I have tried multiple times and I consistently get "A system error occured. Reboot the LinkStation and try configuring it again."

My steps
1. go to RAID
2. select the Array
3. observe "Disk 2 Unformatted"
4. select the Disk and click "Recover RAID Array"
5. enter the confirmation code
6. observe error message "A system error occured. Reboot the LinkStation and try configuring it again."
7. reboot the LS
8. goto 1

[EDIT] I will try the out-of-warranty email queue. It didn't seem to be offered before but there is a hidden link.

HI there, from what I have learnt, you must first take out the faulty HDD (in your case #2), and leave the 'GooD' one in the nas. Then you can go to the rebuild, after first running a 'discover' disk and even a format if the nas requests that.

From what you have written, it's not explicit, did you swap over one or two HDD's? are they the same capacity?
Perhaps put back in the faulty one and run a 'disk check' on the 'GooD one, just to confirm you have the correct disk and it actually is ok to be mirrored from on to the new disk.
If you have critical data that you can't afford to be lost, make a backup of that data, before starting anything.

Replacing a disk on my TS3400 requires a drive with no partitition on it.
Maybe you try the same?
