Title: "Unformatted or not connected" error on Linkstation Duo
Post by: flizzer on August 16, 2023, 09:11:34 PM
Greetings.  I'm hoping someone can help shed some light on an error I'm now receiving on my Linkstation Duo (Product Name: LS-WXL/R1, Firmware Version 1.75).  When viewing in NAS Navigator 2, I see this error:

Unformatted or not connected
931.4GB / 931.4 GB (100.0%)
Error E30: An error occurred on drive 1.
Notice I11: The number of bad sectors or blocks
on drive 1 may have exceeded the allowable value.

However, when I view settings and review the arrays on the device website, "Array 1" which is in RAID 0 mode has a status of "Normal".  The original symptom was the inability to connect to the shared folder via SMB on a Windows 10 client that has a mapped drive setup via UNC path.  I'm obviously hoping that there's a way to recover my data, but this error definitely doesn't give me a warm fuzzy.  Has anyone recovered from such an error before?  In case it helps, my suspicion is that there were some power surges/outages that may have caused this behavior a couple of weeks ago, but that's pure anecdotal conjecture on my part.  Any feedback would be most appreciated.

TIA,

Brian

Unless you want to pay thousands of $$$ to recover the data then it's gone.

Live and learn, never use RAID0 and always make sure you have a proper backup.

Thanks Davo for the reply.  I do have some of it backed up, but not all.  As this is my first Buffalo NAS device, what are the options for data recovery?  Are they purely Buffalo solutions?

Thanks again.

Almost all Buffalo NAS devices are just purpose built computers running linux with linux software raid, so your software options for data recovery are near endless.

With that said, bad sectors are pretty much the crux for any hard drive, some software can handle a few bad sectors here/there, others if you have them at all in area's with data, they don't even try. Its been so long since I even bothered with data recovery so I dont even know what software is out there anymore, be very careful with your google results as malware is everywhere even in the recovery space.

LAST time I called Buffalo for data recovery for a client, they worked with DriveSavers which is definitely going to be $$$, you may try to go with Rossman Repair Group: https://rossmanngroup.com/data-recovery-service-austin/
If you do use any sendout/mailin service, please make sure the drives are properly packaged, the last customer I helped sent me bare drives bouncing around in the shipping box and it went promptly back!
