They've updated most of the firmware updaters to remove the format/partitioning options.
I've added some notes to the wiki about how to manually trigger that process. Once it finishes TSUpdater should let you move forward normally.

Hi, I have the same issue with a recently acquired TS-X8.0TL/R5 unit that came with no drives. It seems to boot up and get to the Welcome To Terastation screen on LCD, get's an IP address on my local subnet, shows up in NAS Navigator with the message that it's in Emergency Mode.
I can ping it and get a response, but any attempt to use the tsx-v176 (TS-X_FW1.76) Firmware updater fails with "Partition not found. Aborting firmware update." and no matter what debug options I choose, or edits made in TSUpdate.ini it refuses to work. Only possible fix I've seen is to use an *earlier* version of the TSUpdater (ie; v1.74 ?) but have not been able to locate any download of that version, only 1.76 which appears to have some bug.
In the Firmware version of TS Updater it shows dashes for the current version, but I think that's normal because I read in a doc it won't show current F/W version when in emergency mode, even in NAS Navigator.
Here are some screen shots. I've added 4 x 2TB 7200rpm drives which were returned to unallocated space, no partitions which didn't help. I even USB mounted each one in my other working Terastation T5200 and formatted to GPT and XFS as well which didn't help.
Really looking for a way to get this thing up and running without having to use TFTP, ACP Commander, etc..methods since it seems to be there and visible to NAS Navigator just stuck in EM. The red reset button under the LCD, when I hold it for 5-10 secs does start to beep and seems to reset the unit.
Thanks in advance!
