Title: LS Quad ROM failure (blinking five red)
Post by: Sunnyfield on March 11, 2010, 10:26:01 PM

After having suffered many serious reliability issues (including lost data) with my Buffalo Linkstation Quad (FW 1.11) in RAID5 mode, I now am stuck with a new problem.

The Quad is blinking five times red, which indicates a ROM failure. I have tried to re-flash firmware 1.11, but once the FW is uploaded I get a ACP_STATE error and the FW upgrade process is aborted. How can I flash firmware, because apparently the existing one is lost and is now shown as "-.--"? Or is it now time to get the warranty card out for repair? To be clear, all four drives are still "green", and there is no HDD malfunction that I am aware of.

Yes it is time to get the unit replaced under warranty.  If you don't have the data backed up you can try to recover the data using UFS Explorer.

Thank you for your prompt reply. Wrgt the UFS Explorer tip I have two questions:

1) Before the ROM error I had a RAID(5) error (blinking red four times), so would it still work?

2) Can I use UFS Explorer now, or only after repair/replacement of the unit? I assume the latter?

I only backed up the really important stuff (such as photos), but not the more trivial stuff like my CD/MP3 collection.

"Before the ROM error I had a RAID(5) error (blinking red four times), so would it still work?"

As long as no damage has been done to the disks.

"Can I use UFS Explorer now, or only after repair/replacement of the unit? I assume the latter?"

You could do it now, but I would suggest waiting until you have the new unit to store the data on (unless you have another storage device).
