I would like to plug a stand-alone external drive into my switch using an ethernet interface and have Debian's "Simple Backup" use it as its archive device.
So, I don't need the USB interface, and the only machine on the network that needs to see it is a Linux server running Ubuntu 9.10. Will the BUFFALO DriveStation FlexNet work for this? Can/Should I reformat it to ext3? What program protocol would I use to get the server and drive to work with each other?
Thanks!
I have not tested it with linux so hopefully another user can help you with that. I would assume it would work like any other NAS with ubuntu and you could access it via network places (I believe). You will not be able to format the unit to anything other than fat 32 or it will lose the LAN functionality.
I have multiple computers. One is running Windows 7 and I have another running Ubuntu 9.10. I have no problems seeing this device as attached storage on my network.
