Following the instructions on the Buffalo FAQ/Knowledge base will only result in a corrupted drive. Essential steps are missing from the instructions.
You cannot simply select the drive from Disk Utility and choose Erase - Mac OS Extended. You must first *delete* the DOS partition. You do this by opening Partition, selecting the partition and then hitting the delete key. You can now add a new Mac OS Extended partition. Assuming you are on an Intel based Mac, you must first select "Options" before you hit apply. Choose GUID partition. Now you can apply the settings and format the drive to Mac OS Extended.
Can you please update your instructions to include the above information?
Tray,
This is a known issue with Macs when trying to format a drive with a MBR partition over a certain size (I think it is like 640 GB). This is NOT the case with all drivestations, just our 1 TB and larger drives, thus the reason it is not in there. I will forward a request that a link be added to the FAQ on that for you.
I guess that I am one of the many who fell into the trap and now having a corrupted drive (mine is a Buffalo MiniStationLite HD-PEU2 500G)...
The worse is that, I cannot even delete the partition, nor as simple as unmounting the drive from my Mac. Not to mention that basically the drive is not usable right now. No matter what I did with the Disk Utility (erase, re-partition, or even just eject), it just failed with a message saying "The disk "BUFFALO HD-PEU2 Media" could not be unmounted".
Need help please...
I am trying to follow the amended instructions in the thread above as the original instructions that came with the Buffalo 1.0 tb resulted in the error message "cannot unmount disk", but I am still experiencing the SAME error message!
In the thread above they instruct to: "Following the instructions on the Buffalo FAQ/Knowledge base will only result in a corrupted drive. But this also does not work! I am using a macbook Pro 10.4.11 OSX.
Can anyone help??!!!!
