Title: Terastation to Linkstation backup over hardware VPN
Post by: Stevedv on February 01, 2010, 05:12:37 AM

Well, after a few months of tweaking, i finally got my backup solution working.

However, I am still trying to figure out why the remote "Append" backup of 200gb portion takes days to complete.

Here is my setup:

The main office is a Terastation model TS-RHTGL/R5 F/W 1.33 configured as a raid 10.

The remote office is a Linkstation model LS-WTGL/R1-V3 F/W 3.09 configured as a raid 1.

The vpn is a hardware setup using two cisco PIX 501 routers.

The Terastation does a nightly differential backup of 200GB to a locally  connected USB Lacie disk.. This ensures that any file deletions on the source will follow to the destination USB drive .The operation  takes about an hour which of course is great.

After the differential backup completes, I fire off an "Append"  backup of the USB drive to the remote Linkstation through the hardware VPN.

I do this to ensure I will retain and be able to recapture any file deletions from the past.

For the initial Terastation USB drive to Linkstation backup, I brought the Linkstation to the Main office and did the backup on the local network which took about 12 hours.

However, now with the Linkstation at the remote office, the backup takes 2-3 days to complete, significantly bogging down my remote office network for the entire time.

Because the "Append" backup sends only the changes and does not remove deleted files on the destination, i figured this should not take long as my data does not change much.

Any thoughts would be great.
