Title: TS-XEL Some with NAND, some not. How to tell externally?
Post by: JoeAsheville on February 15, 2022, 04:58:09 PM
According to the following wiki (thanks 10000): https://buffalonas.miraheze.org/wiki/Terastation_TS-XEL

Some TS-XELs have onboard NAND, while others do not. From what I understand the onboard NAND makes it easier to recover these devices after complete drive de-population, as the firmware is stored in the NAND. If my understanding is correct...is there a way to determine which units have onboard NAND through external inspection? Or does the cover have to be removed and the mainboard examined to determine the answer?

If you watch the LCD screen while it boots it will display the size of the NAND, I believe mine says 0 or 0MB when it gets to that part.

Good to know. My question pertains to obtaining these units used, without disks installed. Would you have any idea if the unit would test/display NAND size with no disks installed, i.e., would it get that far during boot?

It displays the NAND size before if even scans for disks, right after initializing the memory. If you can power it on and the display works it will tell you.

Here's what it looks like from the serial console:

U-Boot 1.1.4 (Mar 14 2015 - 02:25:51) Marvell version: 3.4.16
Buffalo Version: 3.03-0.01

U-Boot code: 00600000 -> 0066FFF0  BSS: -> 006BE9A0

Soc: 88F6281 A0 (DDR2)
CPU running @ 1200Mhz L2 running @ 400Mhz
SysClock = 400Mhz , TClock = 200Mhz

DRAM CAS Latency = 6 tRP = 6 tRAS = 18 tRCD=6
DRAM CS[0] base 0x00000000   size 256MB
DRAM Total size 256MB  16bit width
[512kB@f8000000] Flash: 512 kB
Addresses 8M - 0M are saved for the U-Boot usage.
Mem malloc Initialization (8M - 7M): Done
NAND:No NAND device found!!!
0 MB

CPU : Marvell Feroceon (Rev 1)

Write allocate disabled

Module 1 is RGMII

USB 0: host mode

Marvell Serial ATA Adapter
Integrated Sata device found
Port Multiplier found @ 0 0. Vendor: 11ab ports: 4

You can see that it's well after it reports the NAND size that it even checks if drives are present or not.
