Title: Backup to another LinkStation with dynamic IP?
Post by: sgifford on January 14, 2010, 10:52:05 PM

I just set up a LinkStation for an organization with two offices.  I will soon set up an identical unit in their other office, and I was hoping to have the two devices back each other up.

Currently, both offices have a dynamic IP address, and looking at the LinkStation manual, it seems that it requires a static IP address to configure the backup server.

Has anybody gotten backups to work with dynamic addresses?  Maybe using buffalonas.com to get the IP address, or dyndns.org?

Any suggestions are welcome!  It is a nonprofit with a small tech budget, and I'm hoping I don't have to tell them they will need to upgrade their Internet connections to get static IP addresses.

Thanks!

----Scott.

You need to make sure that both device's are set on the same subnet.

Is separate subnets an absolute requirement?  I had hope to use these for offsite backups, and trying to twiddle the network into putting two offices with independent DSL connections onto the same subnet will certainly be a challenge...
