Title: Help with Linkstation LS-WXL firmware
Post by: cmarino on June 05, 2021, 11:14:42 AM
Hello,
I purchased (unfortunately) 2 Buffalo Linkstation LS-WXL 2-bay with no HDD , thinking that it would be easy to" just install a new disk and use it", as I did in the past with other NAS of other brands (Netgear, and so on).

I have just painfully learned that it's NOT that easy, as the firmware resides ON the HDD.

After complaining to the seller, he just said "just flash a new firmware using TFTP and upload the firmware into the NAS, go check on buffalotech, they will help you", but it doesn't seem that easy as he says.

Is there a IDIOT-PROOF step by step guide, somewhere, with ALL the necessary steps for flashing the firmware into the NAS after installing a brand new, blank disk?
Example:
1) download this software HERE (link)
2) download firmware HERE (link)
3) do this and that in order to upload the firmware into the nas
?
I looked but I found incomplete guides, made by somebody who does it every day (therefore missing important parts that rookies don't know) or made FOR somebody who already know what to do. I don't!

Also, somebody says that having 2 hard drives inserted is mandatory for this procedure to work, and that it won't work with only 1 hard drive inserted. Is that true?

Can anybody help? I have 2 NAS I can't use!
Thanks

There is a pinned post with information on how to install the firmware on blank drives:

You are correct that 2-driive devices typically require both drives for this to succeed. The referenced wiki page includes info about a way to sidestep that.
