Title: Trouble accessing shares on LS-CH1.0TL (Ver1) w/ Windows 7
Post by: kellewa on January 01, 2010, 10:16:06 PM

Buffalo WZR2-G300N Router, Firmware Version 1.00_1.26

Buffalo LS-CH1.0TL (Ver1), FirmwareVersion 1.07

Have 2 Windows XP machines running on the network (desktop/laptop) Desktop connects via ethernet, laptop via wireless.  Both have had no issues accessing the Linkstation and all shares.

Add a new Windows 7 laptop.  It can ONLY access the shares while connected via ethernet.  As soon a I drop the ethernet connection I lose access to the shares (Windows responds " windows cannot access\\192.168.11.*, the network path is not found "). I have verified that I am running the latest firmware on both the router and linkstation, have turned off windows firewall and Norton antivirus, have tried booting the laptop in safe mode w/ networking, and spent an hour on the phone with tech support.

I have searched the forum's and found folks with similar problems and have tried some of the suggestions in those posts.  I found one interesting post in the wireless forums http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Solved-Wireless-Threads/Unable-to-access-shares-through-wireless-with-WZR-HP-G300NH/m-p/13505#M132 regarding a problem with a WZR-HP-G300 router which was solved by unchecking the "Separate Feature" in the basic wireless config, but unfortunately that is not an option on my router.

Tech Supports' suggestion is that there is a problem with the wireless adaptor on the Windows & laptop.  It's an Acer Aspire 5532 with a Broadcom Wireless N adaptor. I checked and I have the latest driver for the adaptor.  I also set the WZR2-G300 to wireless G only in the event there was a problem with the N connection, but that didn't help.

My next step is to try purchasing a USB adaptor and possibly new router to see if I can narrow down where the issue lies.  Looking for any tips or suggestions folks might have on what the potential problem is.  I am going to post this in the wireless forums as well.

Thanks,
Warren

Hi!

I've had what I'm pretty sure is the same problem for ages now. See this thread http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7network/thread/57957f7f-7718-4026-83f5-4a462e2f3d14

As you can see from reading that, everyone has different wireless adapters and routers, so the problem is something specific to Windows 7 and the Buffalo NAS. The only thing Buffalo suggested to me is this: http://www.buffalo-technology.com/knowledgebase/users/kb.php?id=10264&category_id=0&sid2=

but unfortunately that's not even possible to do on Windows 7 Home Premium (there's no Local Security Policy editor I can find anyway).

I also tried this: http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Storage/Windows-7-Home-Premium-connecting-to-Terastation-HD-H1-OTGL-R5/td-p/22239

Anyway, long story short, nothing seems to work!

So, sorry not to be of help, but at least I can save you the bother of trying different network adapters etc...!

Olly -

Thanks for the reply and for the links, they were interesting reads.  Unfortunately I too am running Windows 7 Home Premium and so don't have access to the Security Policies (only in Professional and Ultimate I believe).

However, I have made some progress.  I purchased a Netgear WNDA3100 Dual Band Wireless USB adapter and installed it on the Windows 7 machine.  Once installed and configured I turned off the internal wireless on the laptop and was able to connect and access the shares on the Buffalo without a problem.  Once I turned off the wireless USB adapter and reactivated the internal wireless device I I once again lost connectivity to the shares.

I've talked to a few folks about the issue and all seem to agree that if I can connect to the shares via ethernet and an external wireless device, the problem isn't with the Linkstation or most likely Windows 7, but the problem is most likely some conflict or issue with the internal wireless device.

I have an acer laptop and it's a Broadcom 802.11n wireless card installed in the laptop (they can't seem to provide me with a model # and none is listed in device manager).   According to Acer's website I am using the latest driver.   I've talked to Acer tech support and they haven't been much help. They're suggestion is to reinstall the OS and see if that solves the problem.  I'm not optimistic that it will but will let you know once I've completed the restore.

Out of curiosity, do you know what make/model wireless card you have?

Interesting. The onboard wireless in the netbook is based around the Realtek RTL8187SE chipset. I've also tried a Netgear Wireless USB adapter (not the same one you've tried) which, in my case, didn't work! Guess I was unlucky, and that's why I assumed (wrongly) that it wasn't a problem with the wireless adapter.

One thing I have done is to reinstall the OS from scratch, and that definitely didn't help...

I'll try contacting Realtek to see if they have any ideas.

Thanks for the info.

I reinstalled the OS and nothing's changed,  I'm at the point where I'm going to return this laptop and start over.

Won't be buying one with a Broadcom radio in it and hopefully I won't have the same issue.

In my case I think that the issue isn't with the Linkstation but some issue betwen the the Buffalo router and the Broadcom wireless card in the laptop.  For what's it's worth I did confirm with Buffalo Tech that they use a Broadcom radio inside the wireless router, so maybe there is some conflict between the two.

Thanks for the help.

So I started over and picked up a Dell Inspiron 15 running Windows 7 and low and behold I'm having the same problem.  I've tried connecting in safe mode w/ networking with no luck.  As it turns out the Dell mini 1397 wireless card also uses a broadcom chipset.  Not sure if it's the same as the Acer I returned but I do find it a bit of a coincidence.  I'm going to call Buffalo tech support and see if they have any suggestions.

Have you tried a Buffalo Wireless card?  Not sure if that helps, that is such a strange issue.
