Hi everyone,

Yesteday I upgrade my old reliable TS-XL/R5 from 1.73 to 1.74 and after it restarted, my Windows computers can no longer access it. The Debian Linux machine still maps the shares, but nothing from any Windows machine. It does not even show up in the Netowrk folder or in ACP Commander. I tried to access via Putty and now my root password no longer works, so I am locked out there as well.

Does anyone know what happened and how I can fix it? In the web gui, it shows all protocols activated, including SMB.

I must have updated the firmware on one of these devices after changing root password/enabling ssh/etc but I can't seem to remember a time I did it or what I ended up doing....

My guess with how the firmware update works is that you would have to repeat any steps that you previously took to enable root access and ssh as those conf files would have been overwritten by the new firmware. 

I would think windows failing to find it would mean that you did something previously to get the NAS using SMB2 rather than SMB1 that may have also been undone by the firmware update. I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the samba config for this device under the stock firmware so I don't really know how you'd troubleshoot that piece.

If you're interested, you could replace the stock firmware with a Debian installation which would give you SSH access and more control over your samba configuration:

You were spot on! SMB configuration must have gotten reset. I followed this thread and that part was solved:

Now, for SSH, I ended up using ACP Commander to enable it and reset the root password. Now all is good.

I will definitly try Debian! That sounds great. I am setting up a Proliant server with Debian 10 and Open Media Vault at the moment and it would be nice to use Debian on the Buffalo NAS!

Well, almost all good LOL. I can access via SSH getting Access Denied. Telnet works fine with the root user (so I know the password is ok I guess) but it is denied on SSH. I read somewhere that you have to allow root logon for SSH. Do you have any idea on that?

This is usually done by editing /etc/sshd_config.

Ah, using acp commander. I had run that with the -o (I think?) to allow SSH but I am not sure if it sets AllowRoot to yes. I will try that or just run the commands directly on the Telnet terminal :)
