I've upgraded my Linkstation (HS-DH500GL) with a 1.5TB (WD15EADS-00P8B0) harddrive (Yes, I know that replacing the HDD will void my warranty :smileyhappy:).
After the drive installation I performed a successful TFTP boot procedure and firmware update (v2.11) and was able to access the web interface and the blank share on the drive.
But after reboot I keep getting the 'E16 - unable to locate internal HDD' error.
I have tried to reinstall the original (untouched) Samsung HD501LJ (500GB) drive, but that now gives me the same E16 error.
Have I bricked my Linkstation?
Okey - this keeps getting stranger...
Was working on getting the original (untouched) harddrive (w/firmware 1.03) to work.
First 2-3 boots gave me the E16 error... then on the 4th boot I got 4 red flashes which is a cooling fan problem according to the manual.
So I booted the box again and this time I got 6 red flashes (Hard Drive can not be recognized)... so again I rebooted once more and this time the Linkstation was found by NASNavigator2, so I flashed and formated it with firmware 2.11
So as of now my Linkstation is working - but only with the original disk.
But I'm still looking for help getting a 1.5TB drive installed... without the E16 error. :smileywink:
The LS uses a XFS linux file format. You need to format the drive into XFS then try the steps you have done.
So do a full XFS format of the drive before installing it the my LS box, right?
Just a second question, Josh... do you know if the LS will support 1.5 or 2 TB drives?
I'm wondering if the issue is related to the drive size not being supported by the LS hardware.
I cannot confirm or denie it but from what I have seen from other user post the LS can only handle 1tb drives. The best way to to find out is to format that drive to XFS and then see what happens.
I just got a 750 GB Seagate (ST3750330AS) drive working. Now I'm moving on to the WD 1.5 TB drive.
Please let us know the results!
Gave up on the 1.5 TB (WD15EADS) drive - I also tried with a 1 TB (WD10EADS)... still E16 error.
So I guess the Linkstation can't support WD green drives. :smileysad:
If your WD comes with model EADS, then it is problematic to which i've found out.
After days of testing on the EADS model and problems proving to be too much, i went back to the retailer and change for a EARS model.
EADS: 32mb cache
EARS: 64mb cache
But so far so good on my Linkstation Pro (LS-GL).
Please let us know the full model and version of the drives you tried, especially the one that now works. I tried with WD10EADS-00P8B0, and this always showed E16 at restart (even though it worked after this!).
I have read confusing responses, like >1TB might be a problem, 32MB cache might be a problem. The real problem is lack of full technical explanation as to why we might get a problem. Therefore, please share as much as possible.
I changed my LS-GL to a WD5000AAVS-00ZTB0 which worked flawlessly, and WD7500AADS-00M2B0 works ok too.
The drive below is tested and works with Linkstation HS-DH500GL
750GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 (Model: ST3750330AS / PN: 9BX156-303)
Just another note. Upgrading the HD size is not supported but technically it can be done.

This is something that we do not support and it is known that we do not support this. This is not a response that is welcome here. We do try to help as much as we can!
"The real problem is lack of full technical explanation as to why we might get a problem. Therefore, please share as much as possible".
Hi, I understand this is not officially supported, and *do* appreciate all the help we are getting.
I was not being critical, or unappreciative, and I definitely don't want a battle, but the fact remains that we don't have clear technical answers to a few key points. I am only trying to help others by spreading my experiences.
For what it's worth, I have 15 years embedded software development experience. I'm just trying to help. That's all!
We do appreciate the help! I would like to encourage you to post more of your findings on here and help other users with issues that your are experiencing with the Upgrading of the HD's and see if you can come to some beneficial solutions.
The drive below is tested and works with Linkstation HS-DH500GL
1.5TB Samsung SpinPoint F2EG (Model: HD154UI (1500GB/R54/32M) / PN: HD154UI/Y)
Got the 1.5 TB Samsung SpinPoint F2EG (HD154UI) and I though it worked, but no... :smileysad:
Now I'm getting E04 (flash error) with firmware 2.10 - any ideas?
Update: Booted the box into EM mode and then rebooted it... now it's works again. :smileytongue:
Re-confirm: The Samsung HD154UI SpinPoint 1.5TB upgrade works fine.
WD Caviar WD20EARS 2TB works fine in my LS-Pro.. using the standard TFTP Boot Recovery process and without any kind of special formatting.
Question to anyone - has anyone tackled the 4k sector size issue with "Advanced format" hard drives like the WD Caviar. I have a feeling the LS-Pro formats with standard 512b sector size.. which will probably reduce the efficiency of this drive (at least).
I'm thinking of pulling the data off the drive, reformatting each partition with 4k sector size and copying it back on.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
I have two HS-DHGL Linkstations with FW2.10. Other with WD20EADS-32R6B0 works OK after power on, but WD15EADS-00P8B0 (same as in 1st message) does not work and after power on ther is a Error 1 long and 6 shorts. If I do TFTP Boot then it starts to work until new power on and same fault again. With Samsung 500 Gb HD501LJ FW2.10 works OK. So there is a incompatibility with HS-DHGL and WD15EADS, but what?
