Title: Linkstation Quad problems
Post by: thetoothbrush on December 21, 2009, 09:09:41 AM

When we power on our Linkstation Quad it powers on with 6 blinking red lights by the power button.  I've tried booting with holding the Function button for 6 seconds so that the Function button is flashing blue. Then pressing is once more when it is flashing.  Once I do this the power button flashes 6 times pauses then flashes 6 times again constantly and it will just sit here and do nothing.  If I press and hold the Function button now the Power button with show a constant Blue light while the Function button flashes a constantly flashing Blue light also.  It wont do anything else.  We are unable to ping it, log into its web interface and cannot see it on the NASNavigator.  Any ideas...

It could have an internal hardware issue or it could be in the middle of a disk check or a restructure or raid check.  I would let it run for a few days and if it doesn't self correct and you can't see it with the nas navi or a firmware updater then call in for a warranty replacement if it's within a year of purchase.

You might want to look around these forums a little, I thought I came across something stating that the Quads were basically not what they were supposed to be and alot of folks were having trouble with them. If I remember right even one of the mods admitted that they were having issues with the Quads and that Buffalo was aware of it was was working on it. The mod that responded to you is correct it might be in the middle of a process but sometimes giving it a few days to see if it fixes itself might not be an option, specially if you are using the quad for a business like its advertised to be for. Look through these forums there is some good info from the other members.

I just bought the Buffalo Quad (1TB) and added another 1TB disk.  At first, it boots up just fine. I was able to access the web interface and login.  However, after I tried to create a RAID-1 (mirror), the NAS powered off by

itself (I did set the switch to Manual to avoid automatic shutdown).

After power-on the system a few times, the NAS box eventually got into a mode where it flashes 6 times, pause

and repeat the same pattern over & over again.

Should I bring the box back to Buffalo support centre in Singapore and get it replaced?

It sounds like either it lost the firmware or the boot image.  Try to reflash the firmware.  If that dosent work then I would suggest try the TFTP boot.  If you bought the unit in Singapore you have to make sure that you get the firmware and boot image from there support page.

Thanks for the reply .

So, your suggestions was successful in that I was able to recover my LinkStation Quad using TFTP Boot Recovery and view it in NASNavigator.  I was then able to access the web admin and everything looked fine, and also browse the folders and open/copy files, etc.

Now the problem is that whenever I try and reboot the NAS, it returns to the blinking 6 times error and the only way I can access anything is to go through the above steps again.

So I tried applying a forced firmware update (as it already had the current firmware v1.11 so I had to force it) as per FAQ number 2 hoping that might solve the issue but it did not seem to make a difference.

So I'm kind of stuck.  It appears I will be able to retrieve all my data which is great but only through the EM/TFTP mode.

Any further ideas?

Thanks Again.

wurox, I'm having similar proble as you had. I want to try tftp boot, but the buffalo support in my region doesn't provide boot image. Was the boot image you used from your region's support? Or from US support?
