Title: Terrastation III newbie-startup concerns
Post by: minderbinder on December 12, 2009, 02:43:25 PM

Just purchased rackmount Terastation III for use in home office and with media centre for movies etc. Every time the unit starts up it goes through a full initialize sequence taking about 5 minutes which is very noisy and seems to be running the discs at very high speeds. This even happens when the unit comes out of standby when computers on network are switched back on. Is this standard?

Also once it has completed this sequence and settles down the fans are always running and noisy. Is there anything that can be done about this? I wrongly assumed that the fans would be thermally controlled and not running continuously.

Here's from what i've observed.

The fans are running if the hdds starts to get hot and upon booting.

Once the whole unit is cooled down, the fans will gradually stop spinning.

Regarding the noise, its just normal.

I mean for me, I've another rackmount NAS that has even louder spinning noise from the fans.

From what we have seen this is normal behavior from the Rackmount units.
