Title: HD-H1.0TGL/R5 hard drive compatibility
Post by: tfarmer on November 15, 2008, 09:26:32 AM
This question has been brought up before, I'm sure, and I looked in the forums for awhile, but couldn't find a post about it. I have the older silver TeraStation with IDE drives; can I upgrade the drives to WD Caviar Blue 500GB WD5000AAKB IDE drives, or will the firmware not support it? What's the largest size hard drive that I can throw in there? Would an IDE to SATA adapter work?

Any standard IDE hard drive 500 GB or less should work fine with the HD-model Terastation. The maximum capacity for single drives it will support is 500 GB. I'm not sure if an IDE-SATA adapter would work, especially since the physical space inside the chassis is limited, or even that the Terastation would recognize them correctly.

Hey

so any drives bigger than 500gb will not work in a TeraStation TS-1.0TGL/R5? Any plans on firmware upgrade to support drives =>1TB for example?

greetings

There are no plans to update the firmware on the discontinued product line.  Our new devices however can support 4TB.

Regarding the question above you said that a TS-1.OTGL/R5 unit cannot handle any drive larger than a 500gb?  This information is different than when I called Buffalo Tech support where the operator told me that it could support up to 4TBs (4x1TB) drives?  Please confirm.  Also I notice the message thread was in regards to the HD-H1.0TGL im asking about the TS-1.0TGL/R5.  Thanks.

I've tested using 500gb IDE hard-disks on the silver Terastation and it works. You just have to do it one by one or if possible, clone the drives individually.

Then I tried using 750gb Harddisk, for a total of 3TB but it cannot boot up. Have tried flashing the firmware but still goes to EM mode.

As for 4TB, i do not have the chance to test it as I do not have 4 x 1TB at the moment.

So I just had to stuck with 2TB at the moment as it is stable and supported by the current firmware.

If I replace each drive individually and restructure the RAID 5 array, I should able to save all my data and move the capacity up to 2TB (actually less in RAID 5)?
