Can the noted be used as an extended drive versus as a NAS?

I don't believe so, you can have this device be a backup target for another machine, but you can plug this into another ls pro duo by ethernet or usb and connect that way.  If that is what you were asking.  YOu can plug in usb hard drives that have supplemental power and are 1.5tb or less.
