Title: Painfully slow backup- pls help!
Post by: mcaprio on November 29, 2009, 09:51:29 PM

New user of a 2.0 TB LinkStation Pro Duo (Model Name: LS-WTGL/R1-V3 Firmware Version: 3.09), running the included Memeo AutoBackup software is experiencing PAINFULLY SLOW first backup: on day 3.5 and only about 50% complete (136GB of 300GB), averaging 1.65GB/hr.  At this rate, it will take >8 days to complete a first backup- this cannot be normal, and is unacceptable!  Also get periodic small popups from Memeo with a white box with a red X as if there is an error? but no description.  Need to solve or I will return the drive to Fry's.

More details-

Running on HP Notebook, P7350 2.00GHZ Core Duo, 3.00GB, Windows Vista Home Premium SP2.

LS Drive connected directly to notebook's onboard Gigabit ethernet NIC port (not on a switch or router) since computer is not on a LAN but rather only connected to internet via a 2Wire DSL wifi router.

Drive appears to be properly Mapped and communicating as "Share (\\LS-WTGL031)(L:)"

Did read the threads about setting the Ethernet Frame size to Jumbo in the Web Admin, set to full size 9,694 and no improvement.

My plan was to get the drive configured and get a first backup over the NIC directly and before trying to set up a LAN and moving my drive to the ethernet port of my 2Wire DSL Wifi router (as I would expect faster performance from the hardwire connection than when sharing the 54 Mbps wifi bandwidth)

Running in RAID 1 (mirror) mode, that is the only thing I changed besides the Ethernet frame size in the Web admin.

System is fully dedicated to running Memeo backup during this time, no other uses logged in, wife is ticked, wants to check email, but I don't want to disturb backup.

QUESTIONS-

What transfer speed should I expect from this drive/config?

Do I need to specially configure my NIC to make it work faster?

Is there a drive hardware problem?

Is Memeo the problem?

Else??

Please advise!

Same problem here with a LinkStation Pro LS-XHL.

System has saved about 32GB in 24h here.

A copy from Notebook to Linkstation per drag and drop seemed to be faster than Memeo Backup.

With drag and drop it copied about 10 GB in 3 hours slow but better than backup with Memeo.

Flashing my Linkstation to latest firmware did not do the trick.

I would be also glad to get a hint on how to speed it up.

There are a variety of factors that could be at play here.  Going to list some of the more common problems.  The firs would be the have a gigabit ethernet port and are configured properly, do the devices that are in use have gigabit ethernet as well? (i.e. laptops, desktops, router)  Did you try adjusting the frame size within the web administration settings for the unit?  Can also try to run a disk check utility on the drive from the web administration of the unit, if there are bad sectors/clustors it will be noted so they will not be accessed.  Memeo has the potential to be a great backup program, please verify all of the settings within the program itself, Windows backup is also efficient, but lacks some of the key points of a "system backup".  These are some redies to check to see if there is any impact on the speed of the unit.
