Title: HD-CE500U2 - Faulty Equipment/Lost Data?
Post by: malstria on November 16, 2009, 04:56:10 PM

I have an HD-CE500US drive which I have been using for a couple of months now. This morning, when trying to save a Word document to one of the file folders already on the drive, I received an error that I was unable to save to the drive. My husband recommended unplugging the drive, waiting 30 secs and plugging it back in. Since then, I am able to plug in the drive and the computer recognizes that there is a drive, but it is not recognizing it as a functional drive. When I try to open the drive, it asks if I want to format it. I checked the properties of the drive and it is not showing that there are any files or even any writable space.

I have tried another USB port and nothing. I also tried plugging it into my husband's computer and it recognized the drive but said there was an error during installation and that the hardware might nto work properly. It ended up with the same issue.

Not sure what additional info you may need, but here is what was requested in the guidelines:

Model: HD-CE500U2

Firmware Revision: Unknown

Computer: AMD Proc, ASUS mobo, Windows XP Pro OS (SP2), standard home network with private router

ANY help you can provide would be EXTREMELY appreciated. I have accepted that my data may be irretrievably lost, but I am hoping maybe it is just a glitch that can be remedied.

Many thanks in advance.

EDIT: Another item to note, after a couple failed attempts at trying to load Windows SP3, two files appeared on my drive that apparently were loaded on Saturday Nov 14th. They appeared to be files relating to the SP3 failed loads. The file names included a series of numbers and letters. I scanned one for viruses/etc but it came back clean. Nothing in the files was accessed. It could be irrelevant, but thought it might be worth noting.

It sounds like the data is corrupted, from a physical failure or a data corruption issue.  You do have a 1 year warranty for the device.  If you did not backup your data you can try contacting datarecovery.com .
