Title: Needing Storage Device
Post by: MBrian on November 16, 2009, 12:43:54 PM

Small business that is needing a backup solution for 3 desktops and a server.  1Tb of storage is probably sufficient, but it would be nice if it were expandable if/when the need ever presents itself.  Currently our server is mirrored, we used to use a Mirra, which we liked greatly until it recently quit working.

I'd like something that could be hooked up through the network for the simple fact that it could be placed away from the server, in the event of a fire, etc...  Any suggestions??

I would also take any suggestions for programs that would perform the backups automatically any time a change to a file is made and we also need to encrypt the drive to NIST standards with 128bit length key.  Another great thing with the mirra was that it "held onto" several versions of the files.  So let's say the file/doc got deleted accidentally, you could go back and grab a previous version of it.  It was a great fail safe that I miss.

Thanks for any recommendations!

How about this?

This is not like Acronis or Norton Ghost, but it is functionally similar to Apple's Time Machine.  It supports AES encryption which has a minimum encryption key length of 128, 192 and up to 256bit and is NIST standard.  I use it and love it for our own small business -- I have 3 computers and 1 server.  Restoring files is so easy and you can go back track pretty much forever, as long as you've got lots of storage space.  Also, what sort of documents are you planning to save to?

You didn't say if your server is RAID mirrored or simply mirrored to another drive via local backup or net backup?

If you want a network backup of your server away from your business property, then get yourself a portable backup drive.  If your server is capable of dumping an image of the whole drive onto an external USB drive, then that's your best bet.  USB Copy is fast and you can take it off-site.  If you want security, get a drive that can do hardware high level encryption that protects your data if you happen to loose the drive.  Buy 2 drives and rotate them on a daily basis and store 1 in your bank's safety box.  You do go to the bank everyday to deposit stuff right?  Bank's safety box is both bomb proof and fire proof!  That what we do.  However, we also have a Buffalo Flexnet 1TB to flank our main server.  The Flexnet is not the fastest NAS drive around, but for serving documents and files smaller than 4Gb with few users, it actually works out quite good when paired with a Buffalo WHR-G300N with the strongest encryption available.

Hope this helps.
