I just got a new LSCH10TL about a week ago.  I have been thrilled with it so far.  I honestly couldn't stand the memeo software ... but I now use microsoft synctoy.

 

However, there are a few things that I have not been able to get working correctly.  

 

Problem #1:

 

When I enable security on the webshare ... and then go to www.buffalonas.com and log in to my nas ... internet explorer states the digital certificate is expired.  It only does this when I have security enabled.  What is the point of having security enabled if the it is going to say the certificate is expired every time.

 

Problem #2

Most important ....I have a music folder with about 35GB of music in it.  When I try and access this folder (itunes music ... so it is all organized into folders for artist and album) through web access ... it sits there for a very very long time and then internet explorer finally says that a script is causing my internet to run slow and do you want to stop it.  If I say yes it will show some of the artist folders, but not all.  Shouldn't accessing large amounts of data be relatively quick ... considering that it is a 1TB NAS...kinda of the point of having a 1TB NAS.  I suppose I could probably use FTP if I had too ... but isn't that what webaccess is for ... to make it easier.

 

Question #1

One last question ... how would I put my music on my NAS so that itunes would recognize it as a network shared itunes library?

   For iTunes, you can use Media Server function. From Web Admin, find a tab called "Media Server." Enable media server function and choose a share holder which you store your music files. Make sure to refresh the media server database.

I got really frustrated with buffalo's web access ... so I have been trying to set everything up with FTP instead.  But I would still like to get webaccess working ... just to have multiple avenue's to access my data.

 

I have only been able to access ftp from within my network ... is there special I have to do to access via ftp outside of my network?

 

The knowledge base says this:

 

KB#000062 - Remote FTP LinkStation

REGION: All

ISSUE: How to setup remote FTP for LinkStation

PLATFORM: LinkStation NAS

SOLUTION: In order to use ftp from a remote location, users will need to forward ports 20 and 21 to the internal IP address of the Linkstation from the users router. Also, the Linkstation needs to have the correct Default Gateway information.

From the Linkstation Web Setup:

1. Navigate to Network->IP Address Settings.
2. Make sure Default Gateway is enabled and that the internal IP address of the router is entered.
3. After applying, the user should be able to access the Linkstation's ftp shares from a remote location by typing "ftp://ipaddress" (where "ipaddress" is the external IP address of the users router) into a web browser.

 

I imagine I will have to find out the external IP address of my router do this.

 

Does anyone know a way that I could easily access my files through a good ftp client ... or possibly even map remote ftp to a drive letter for easy access?

 

I just want to easily access my files on the go ... since webaccess sux!

   

Web Access setup: 

 

Firstly log onto the web interface page of the linkstation. Click User management and create a new user called "test" (no quotes) and give it a password "test" and whatever description you want and apply these settings. Then click on shared folders => Add and enter the following details:
Shared folder name: test
Description: test
Shared folder Support: Tick all four options
Attributes: Read/Write
Remote Backup Password: Leave blank
Access Restrictions: Enabled (And move the test user ONLY to read/write access) and click applyNow click on Web Access along the left hand side and click Service Setup
Enter the following details:
Web Access Service: Enabled
HTTPS/SSL Encryption: Disabled
Use Buffalonas.com: Enabled
Buffalonas.com name: Specify a unique name here
Buffalonas.com key: Specify a unique key here
Auto Configure Firewall (UPnP): Disabled
External Port: 9000
Click Apply
Go to your routers configuration page and manually forward port 9000 for TCP to the IP address of the linkstation (You may need to contact your router manufacturer to do this correctly)

Now under the web access heading click Folder setup and select the test folder
Web access Settings: Use inherited Folder Permissions
Click Apply

Now go to www.buffalonas.com and enter the buffalonas.com username you specified. If this works correctly you will be asked for a username and password, enter the username "test" and the password "test" (no quotes)This should then log you onto the test folder and if you have put any data on it then the files will be displayed.  regarding ftp from outside your, if your folder does not have access restrictions, open your broswer and type ftp://WANIPADDRESS or if it does have access restrictions type: ftp://username:password@WANIPADDRESS (you can get your WAN ip from your router or your ISP)
