Title: LinkStation HS-DH500GL Hard Drive Fault Recovery
Post by: Fran_D on November 01, 2009, 10:46:03 AM

OK, I experienced a hard drive fault this morning and found this "solved" topic  that exactly describes my situation.  However, when I get to the part where it states to "run the 2.11 FW updater utility" the LSUpdater routine can't find the NAS.  It searches then says," Can't find LinkStation to update."

I have no problem booting the NAS in emergency mode using the directions, and I get the "...blocks served" message at the bottom of the DOS window.  What is going on?  How can I recover this drive?  Help!?!?

Oh yeah, in case it matters, I'm using an XP computer (the one I've been using since day one) to try to access the NAS.

Disable Nas Navi and shut all of your anti-virus programs down and firewalls.  If you not sure about a program disabling then I would suggest booting into safe mode with networking.

OK, that didn't do it either.

Once again, every step in the process works up to the point of LSUpdater trying to find the NAS.  TFTP has no problem.  What is going on?

Can anyone help here, or am I SOL?

It may already have the latest firmware so try forcing the update once you have it booted (either TFTP or EM mode).  Other than that just make sure you have the correct model number and firmware version and it should work.

"...so try forcing the update once you have it booted..."

This is the problem.  I can boot in EM just fine, and TFTP has no problem communicating with the NAS.  However, when I try to use the updating utility, LSUpdater, it can't find the NAS.  NasNavi can't find it either.  What can I do to force the update?

The only thing that could be preventing it from showing (assuming it's booted up) is firewalls.  Make sure you actaully disable the firewall in any antivirus software you have (do not just disable the program).  Also I have noticed that certain firewalls still stay relatively active in safe mode (MacAfee for instance).

Also, if it isn't showing in the NAVI, how do you know that it booted into EM mode?

 Yep, firewalls are off.

"...Also, if it isn't showing in the NAVI, how do you know that it booted into EM mode?"

Because TFTP connects to it.

Well those are the only things that could be blocking it.  If you are still having issues I would call our support line for further troubleshooting or a replacement (if it's within its warranty)

The last thing, double check to make sure you have the correct TFTP software.  If you have the wrong one it would pull the files but the updater wouldnt find it because it would show as a different unit entirely.  Once you have confirmed this I would contact support.

I downloaded the one labeled, "TFTP Boot Recovery HS-DHGL 2.10.exe," so I am assuming that is the correct one.

One other data point, though.  I don't know what the sequence of events is supposed to be on boot up, but the fan doesn't start at all.  I seem to recall that the fan came on immediately on power-up, but I may be mistaken.  Should I see the fan running, regardless?

Yes the fan should be running if the unit is booting up.
