Title: XFS or FAT32?
Post by: tnbtaylor on October 31, 2009, 01:56:22 PM

What is the best USB format for backups, XFS or FAT32?  I want to be able to see/access the files on Windows7, etc.  The Buffalo manual is awful, so I need real solutions and the best advice.  XFS seems like it is useless unless you have a Linkstation.  Please help!

XFS is linux file format and the preferred method (seeing as these units use XFS).  But if you need it to work with windows you'll need to format it fat 32 as it is compatable with all files systems.  But then you won't be able to edit files on the drive.

Do note that FAT32 does have file size limitations.  If you have files > 3.9GB, you'll likely not be able to back them up properly.

Also certain file attributes don't exist whereas they do on a modern filesystem like NTFS.
