Hi, I've read some of the posts on how slow the backup of the Linkstation is and have done some tests. I'm convinced one of the major reason could be the slow processor built into the linkstation. Therefore I'm looking for 3rd party software that would do remote network drive backups? Using this approach one can leverage the fast processor of the desktop to triple or quadruple the speed for backing up the Linkstation. Btw, I would apprecite if anyone would share this information if you know....
Here's my test - I use Norton Ghost 14 on a Dell desktop AMD X2 2.4ghz running Vista Ultimate 64bit edition to back up the entire C drive with 189GB data with normal compression and it only took roughly 2.5 hours (definitly less than 3 hours) over a gigbit network to the linkstation. This is consistent and I've done this couple of times now. A month ago, I attached a USB 2.0 (ATA 7200rpm) drive to the linkstation and used the builtin backup software on the Linkstation to backup the same amount of data and it took more than 48 hours with compression. Yesterday morning approx. 10 am I started another backup with about 200gb data using builtin backup software without compression. It is almost 24 hours now and it's still going.... Unfortunately, Norton Ghost does not allow backup network drives. The Network Backup Exec from Symantec is probitively expensive for me to use as a home solution. Thank you in advance for your time and assistance.
