My TeraStation has not missed a beat in 8 years until today when Disk #6 failed. It is a Seagate ST2000DL001 (2TB, 5900 RPM, 32MB, SATAIII, 3Gbps). Exact replacements are not readily available in Australia but there are a few used and reconditioned identical drives available from the USA and Hong Kong. Could I use an equivalent but different SATAIII, 2TB drive in my RAID6 array? If so, what aspects must match precisely for this selection?

That's good info to know.  I have a few of those ST2000DL001 units here that are pretty much new still. 

I would assume you could use a different model 2tb drive, as long as the replacement is equal to or greater than the number of LBA blocks that the ST2000DL001 has.  You could probably even go with a bigger drive too, though it won't use the additional space in the current array.  I've never tried that myself, but I've heard it can be done.  What model of terastation is it?  Maybe it is time to redo all the drives in it, and increase the size along the way.

And of course, make sure you back everything up- before you make any changes.

Thanks Kane88. I'd be interested in an exact replacement if my current idea fails. I've ordered a Seagate ST2000DM008 from my local trusted supplier for AU$88. I'll set it up and see how it goes. If it works OK, I'll end up with a better modern replacement than the existing drives. Ultimately, all drives will be upgraded. We'll see.

These devices don't seem to be particularly picky about drives. No one can guarantee you'll have success with any given model drive but have had good results with everything I've tried so far.
