My network consists of LS Live 500GB, Linksys WRT320N router, HP laptop, and generic desktop. The router and Linkstation recognize their connection as gigabit.
Noticed a problem when moving a file from the Linkstation Live to my desktop PC (XP 32 bit, gigabit router and NIC). Updated all drivers and firmware, but found no solution. In the end, I tested the transfer rates between all devices.
I did several moves of an MP3 directory containing 126 files totaling 561MB.
Here are the times:
From Linkstation to wireless laptop--4:10
From wireless laptop to Linkstation--3:20
From wireless laptop to desktop PC--3:55
From desktop PC to wireless laptop--3:07
From desktop PC to Linkstation-- 1:21
And here's the kicker--From Linkstation to desktop PC 15:50 (yes, almost 12x as long) <---------
I have tried two different NIC's in the desktop (different brands, both gigabit) with almost identical results.
Any ideas why the transfer rate from the Linkstation to the PC would be THAT slow compared to all other transfers?
Thanks.
Try to ping from desktop and wireless in command line ping 192.168.11.8 -t That is an interesting issue with that desktop.
Using that IP address (192.168.11.8), it reported "Request Timed Out" on both computers. Are you sure that's the address I should have used?
Thanks,
Will
I am thinking that he meant that as an example. Try the linkstations IP
Pinging the Linkstation from the wired desktop gets:
Reply from 192.168.1.102: bytes=32 time =<1ms TTL=64
After a Control-C stop
Ping statistics for 192.168.1.102:
Packets: Sent = 252, Received = 252, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 1ms, Average = 0ms
Pinging the Linkstation from the laptop gets:
Reply from 192.168.1.102: bytes=32 time =2ms TTL=64
After a Control-C stop
Ping statistics for 192.168.1.102:
Packets: Sent = 332, Received = 332, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 91ms, Average = 2ms
--->All but 3 of the 332 pings were at either 1 or 2 ms.
That's a very strange issue. My guess is that the hard drive on the desktop is close to full, severely fragmented, or both.

I thought of that early on. There are two hard drives in the desktop. The primary hard drive is a 320gb SATA that has less than 100gb on it. The other is a 250gb IDE that is 3/4 full. When I did my multiple copies, I tried both hard drives. There was really no difference in the transfer speed between the two desktop drives and, more significantly, when I copied from the laptop directly to the desktop across the network, the transfer rate was not slow (see my first posting).
Please don't give up on suggestions!!
Thanks.
