Title: USB Drive HD HS320U2 format RAW
Post by: garonson on October 25, 2009, 10:35:04 AM

I've been backing up from a NAS to USB drive and my NAS is having problems and i can't access it. so i attached the USB drive directly to my PC and it asked if i'd like to format it b/c the data couldn't be read. instead i got a program called EXT2 and i was able to see the drive and the format is RAW. i was under the impression it should be XFS. i got another program caled file scavenger which allowed me to search the drive for data. i did a quick search and it seems the files are there but they all have names like unknown0001. doc or unknown00034.xls, etc. for me to have to look at each file and rename would take a lifetime. so i want to know if i get a new linkstation,c and attach the usb drive to it, will the format be xsf and will i be able to read my data like it was before i started having this trouble with the nas i now have?

getting a new linkstation might work, but before that I recommend booting up your computer from a Linux LiveCD to see if it reads the XFS filesystem

i went to the ubuntu site and it from what i can tell if i install it i'd be replacing my mac os. i don't think i want to do that.  i'm not sure about Knoppix. if that's not necessary with either or both products, please let me know.

It wont replace the OS if you just boot it off the CD.  It won't automatically install, just make sure you don't tell it to install
